Airhogs Augmented Reality Mission Drone Review: A city at your fingertips

Airhogs has been making fun drones for sometime now and it looks like they’ve gotten into something completely different this time with the ConnectAugmented Reality Mission Drone. When I first heard of this is definitely not what I was expecting and it was pretty cool going through it! Here’s a breakdown on our thoughts on the whole thing.

Hardware/Software
I opened up the drone kit and found a foam/plastic drone, along with the tracking mat (which is the physical space in which the augmented reality will take place). The drone itself is very lightweight since it’s technically made of foam parts an didn’t feel too sturdy but was when testing. I followed the instructions in the guide and let the drone charge by connecting it to my computer. As the drone was charging, I downloaded the Mission Drone app from
the app store onto my iPad. (Note: the app is very user friendly and feeds you information
in a step-by- step process that is easy to understand.) I was impressed with the visuals of the app. The graphics in the Mission Drone app are done well. Once the drone was fully charged, I placed the drone in the center of the tracking pad and opened the app on my iPad. I had to connect the app to the drone via bluetooth.
Surprisingly, you don’t need anything else other than the tracking pad, the drone and your mobile device to get going.

You have to align your mobile device with the physical tracking pad on the floor to ensure the app and the drone stay connected. This is important or else you can interrupt what is taking place in reality on
your screen). The training teaches you how to fly the drone within the parameters of the
tracking pad. I did the training sessions to really get a feel for piloting this
drone. One thing is you don’t have any controller for the drone, simply use the app to get it going. Use your
finger to tap and drag the drone on screen within the app to fly and hover the drone. It gets a bit tricky once you start encountering obstacles or buildings –so I suggest really practicing to grasp the concept.

Once you get a handle of it really is easy to fly and control the drone. The drone is also sharply responsive, so if you need to land the drone, it will land as soon as you press the button on the screen. Another positive feature of the game is that the tracking pad is small and you don’t need a big space to play the game and/or pilot the
physical drone. As you fly the drone within the app, the landscape of the city changes as
you fly, so it’s as if you are really flying through an actual city!

A big concern we have was its battery life. I find the battery life of the drone to be poor. I flew the drone for about 5-6 minutes before having to charge it again. The upside is that you can charge the drone effortlessly
with the USB cord while still playing around with elements in the game in the meantime.

Airhogs Connect Augmented Reality Mission Drone is something I’ve never seen before and for a first try at it I’d say they did a good job. The missions of saving the city from alien encounters are very straight-forward, you get to enjoy intricacy of the augmented reality experience which is the point. However for the $150 price tag we just wished that it gave you more options to fly the drone untethered to the iPad and track mat. None the less it is a new way t play with a drone that everyone can enjoy! You can pick one up now at Amazon via the link.

Microsoft’s Surface Studio is an artist’s wet dream

Microsoft had a couple of announcements yesterday but a big one was the new Surface Studio. It’s a 28-inch all-in-one computer, one of their first endeavors into the desktop world. The very minimalist and sleek design seems like a page from Apple, HP and Dells book. The 28-inch PixelSense display is capable of showing off over a billion different colors, every artist/photographer/videographer’s dream. A wireless keyboard and mouse come standard as most computers do, but the nice addition to the Studio is the Surface Dial and Surface Pen. Just like a chisel needs a hammer, the Dial is another tool in your work bench. The Dial gives you the ability to cycle through color schemes or changing zoom levels as easily as placing the Dial on the screen itself or on the table and rotating the Dial. The large display is able to swivel down to become an artist’s easel so you can get up close and personal with all your work.

The Studio will come in three flavors:

Intel Core i5
8GB of RAM

1TB HD
Price: $2,999

Intel Core i7
16GB of RAM
Nvidia GeForce GTX 965M with 2GB of RAM
2TB HD
Price: $3,499

Intel Core i7
32GB of RAM
Nvidia GeForce 980M with 4GB of RAM

Arctis line is a headset for all your needs

If you haven’t heard of the SteelSeries they’re a company known for a lot of their PC peripherals. Whether it be their gaming mouse, headsets, or controllers, the company has always made high quality gear for gamers for a reasonable price and for their new Arctis series headsets they strive to bring quality audio across the board.

The Arctis is a new platform spanning from the series 3, 5, and 7. Sound is vital in a majority if not all types of gaming. There’s nothing like the sound of a engine in a car roaring alive and revving up, or the sound of a sniper rifle letting bullet rip out of a barrel to get a head shot and chambering another round for the next victim. What’s even better is when the sound is in full 7.1 surround sound, and SteelSeries’ entry level Arctis 3 does just that. With the base model starting with the new design and 7.1 surround sound S1 sound drivers, (same drivers that are used in their $300 headsets) their platform only grows. What good is a headset if you aren’t able to talk to your teammates?
steelseries-arctis-1323
On top of the S1 sound drivers, SteelSeries added their newly designed, exclusive bidirectional ClearCast mics. What is a bidriectional mic? To explain it a simple way it’s two microphones pointed in such a way where one mic is a noise cancelling mic and the other mic picks up only you. The mic is retractable, and once it’s pulled into place it feels natural and when you adjust it into place. On top of that when you upgrade to the series 5, you get the USB ChatMix dial that attaches by their new innovative universal cable system that can connect to different adapters for whether it be a 3.5mm headphone jack, the 4-Pole plug which adapts to USB, an extender,or to the split Y cord. As for the series 7, since it is wireless, the ChatMix is built right into one side of the ear cups and offers a zero lag audio experience because of a continuous frequency-hopping technology. A benefit of ChatMix is that when it’s plugged in, the driver loads in as two separate channels, one for desktop/game audio and one for voice/chat audio. So when teammates die and get chatty, you can adjust to just game audio to pull off an epic come back. Also when you upgrade from the 3 to the 5 you get built in RGB lighting on the outside of the ear cups, which have the ability to cycle through different colors at the same time or individually. Sadly the RGB option is only available for the series 5, and from the looks of it SteelSeries is putting their money on the 5 being the more popular purchase.

Overall the design of the headset seems very light and innovative. The head strap inside the headset to give it support is an elastic ski goggle like band that is made out of cloth which can be changed out to fit your style. Also the ear cups are made out of an airweave athletic type of mesh material so it’s breathable so your ears don’t sweat for those long sessions. Sewn into the ear cups is a polyurethane lining to keep just the right amount of pressure and seal to keep the bass tones in and ambient sounds out. In case you do sweat a lot and get your ear cups and head band dirty, you can remove them and throw them inside a washing machine to clean. First time I’ve heard you able to wash and clean your ear cups from any type of headset, definitely a thumbs up for innovation in this department. Also when I meant a headset for all your needs, the Arctis framework set up is made for anything from PC, Playstation, Xbox, or even cell phones. Because of the multi adapter plug that the Arctis comes with, you can switch from PC to consoles by just changing out plugs, and when you want to take it on the go for your daily commute just plug it in directly into your phones. Also, don’t worry, the ChatMix works seamlessly with all the platforms. The Arctis 7 will be out early November apparently, since preorders have already begun. Seems to be a great pick up for the holiday season, so definitely keep your eyes and ears out for the Arctis series.

Nintendo Switch announced, NX no more

After all the speculation, rumors and wait the long overdue announcement of Nintendo’s new console has finally arrived. Nintendo has officially revealed the Nintendo Switch, taking over its code name of Nintendo NX. The console slash handheld device will release March 2017. You also heard that right the Nintendo Switch is a powerful handheld that can be taken with you but will have two detachable controls on its sides and will have a dock to be able to play on the big screen.
nintendo-switch-handheld-36953
The hardware that powers it is a custom Nvidia Tegra processor which they’ve worked on to give it the best physics engine, tools and software to fully take advantage the power. The controller is called Joy-cons and can connect to the device or to a control dock to use traditionally. While no games have officially been announced in the teaser trailer you did see The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Skyrim, NBA 2K, Splatoon a mario game and others.

We don’t know the full support of what is to be carried over from the Nintendo Wii U but we saw a glimpse of an Amiibo in the background. No other information on price or anything else has been announced but we’re thinking Nintendo will share that information soon. Check the teaser above and let us know your thoughts. We’ll keep you up to speed on the latest info as it comes in.

Nixplay Iris digital frame review: Elegance at its core

1

Digital picture frames have been out for years but is not a very wide spread concept. This is because they’re either too expensive, not intuitive or very elegant. Nixplay has changed this with their latest digital picture frame Iris. It’s easily one of the nicest screens we’ve seen of this nature by far.

product-features-iris-q445

Hardware
Nixplay has a line of digital frames for different needs but the Iris stands above them all as something to truly show off at your apartment/house. It has a silk metal-finish coming in three colors of either Silver, Peach Copper or Burnished Bronze. Probably its more detailed feature as it looked even better then most of my frames hung up on walls that cost twice the amount. It also features a 1024×768 IPS display and that might not seem like alot for its 8″ size it is. The display gave great picture quality given you’ve taken good photos and has many ways to change its orientation.

The frame connects to a power outlet or computer from usb via a strong cable that’s attached to it. This cable also doubles as the stand for the frame that can be propped vertically and horizontally. There are no real buttons or slots in the device as the remote is its main tool for changing settings, playing the photos or customize its layout.

product-features-web-iris-335

Software
Nixplay has made connecting your digital frames pretty painless from their Nixplay account when you set it up. From here anyone you’d like can go in and create new playlists of photos or add to existing ones. Many great ideas spawn for such features as those that are a long way from home or have relatives and friends can share photos with each other or even update a frame in someones home. We especially loved all the settings you can do with the pictures to make it fit the frame and fun ways of it transitioning.

While having great features it isn’t without its hiccups as there are some missteps. The frames cable which doubles as its stand is an interesting move and while great in concept not always in execution. Sometimes when positioning it on the corner or a desk you’d have to make sure the cord is in a specific direction along with the frame not only to hold it up but to give it enough length. This wasn’t a major issue as you just need to think of how you’d set it up before hand.

That’s also not as bad as the overall software hiccup we had when loading new images or playlists to the frame itself. When doing so we see that the frame loads the pictures but will come up empty when looking at the new playlist and even after showing up the device will not load it stating there’s no playlist. This most likely is due to the fact it’s still download the pictures onto the device but there’s no prompt stating that it is which is confusing to those using it?

product-features-side-iris-335

Bottomline
Overall the Nixplay Iris is a great digital picture frame which isn’t too bad for its current price of $199. The elegance of the frame is enough to sell us on that but if you remember that the complements are mainly digital Nixplay also has plans on opening up its software to developers which can open the doors for interesting features such as videos which would make this a steel!
