What Happened to Trophies in Sports?

notrophies
Remember back in the day? When you used to play Little League or Pee-Wee Football with your friends, and no matter how bad your team sucked, you still got a nice (plastic) gold trophy at the end of the season. It was like the league went up to you and said “Hey, Hey…. Good Job.” Granted, the trophies were awarded as a token of completion of the season, not necessarily individual accomplishments, but at least it was something. In the world of Sports Video Games, trophies are awarded few and far between.

For the longest time, I wondered why my friends would have a higher gamer level than me, when it was obvious I played more than they did. Then I can to the realization that because I play so many sports games, I don’t get nearly the same amount of trophies as they do. So I decided to check out why this was:

Most games that incorporate the trophy or accomplishment system do it so you can achieve these goals during gameplay. What annoys me is that some of these tasks are ridiculously easy.  You can play a game when you get a trophy for beating the first level, or using a special move, or even watching a tutorial.  Many of these games have a story mode where you can advance with your character and along the way do certain tasks to earn trophies, but what about in sports games?

NCAA 2010

In sports games, the only “story” mode is a career mode of sorts.  But there’s no ongoing story line that you can place trophy opportunities in.  Usually, in career modes, the trophies are awarded for stats.  However, many of those trophies are reserved for players who play the games for an extended period of time.  For example, in MLB 09: The Show, one of the trophies is to hit 300 home runs.  Granted the trophy itself is titled “It takes time” but that’s a little ridiculous.  In the Road to the Show feature, there are very limited trophies that you can get with your character, get called up to the MLB, win an award, win MVP.  Those three are doable.  But when you have a trophy for throwing a perfect game against the computer on All-Star or higher difficulty, you’re asking for the controller to be thrown at the cat.

Now don’t get me wrong, I’m all for having some difficult trophies in games, but when I’m playing my career mode for about 10 seasons and I still only have 3 trophies to show for it, it’s a little annoying.

NBA Live 2010

It seems, especially in sports games, that the focus on achieving trophies is playing online.  Personally, I think online trophies should be a separate category.  Have more of a base set of accomplishments for the game itself, then add another set of accomplishments for playing online, because if you think about it, playing online really limits the player to all of the other features available in the game.

I just feel that there needs to be a different mindset when creating the tasks for trophies in sports games.  Have different level trophies for stats like bronze for 100 HRs, silver for 200 HRs, THEN you can have the gold for 300 HRs.  Give a little bit of a pat on the back to your players for actually attempting to achieve these goals.  Is that too much to ask?

First Look: Resident Evil: The Darkside Chronicles Wii

The Resident Evil series has spawned many spinoff titles in recent years but one in particular stood out, and it was an on-rails shooter for the Wii entitled Umbrella Chronicles. The game allowed players a chance to play through Resident Evil 0, 1, and 3 through the eyes of the characters in the series. Unsurprisingly the on-rails gameplay was a perfect fit for the Nintendo Wii, allowing two players to fight side by side using their Wii-motes. The game got decent reviews, and was a welcome M rated game to the kid friendly console. Now Capcom looks to build upon their spinoff with Dark Chronicles, the game will feature Resident Evil 2, and Code Veronica as the main story. Capcom also stated the game will stand out from Umbrella Chronicles in several ways, including the ability to evade attacks. The title is also said to have a classic horror feel to it as opposed to the main series that has taken a much more action theme route. Resident Evil: Darkside Chronicles is scheduled for a late fall release.

Where are all the Beatles Songs?

_BEATLps3BUBOXrev1_sg

The Beatles are arguably the greatest rock band of all time.  With countless #1 singles and a world-wide following, there is no limit as to how many songs should be in the new The Beatles: Rock Band.

Now, I am all for the dramatic aspect of releasing the play list a little bit at a time to add suspense, but in my opinion, there is no reason why there should not be over 30 Beatles songs in the game.  Here are some reasons for my belief:

1.  The Beatles released an album simply called “1”  It was the 27, that’s right, TWENTY SEVEN #1 singles The Beatles had in the UK.

2.  The Beatles’ songs are generally short.  With the exception of certain songs like “Hey Jude,” most Beatles songs are only about 2:30, which means that songs themselves wont take up room.

3.  The Beatles’ songs aren’t necessarily difficult in regards to bass and guitar lines, so the creation of these songs shouldn’t be too much of a problem.

4.  With the incorporation of the new harmonizing feature, there’s no reasons some songs that don’t have any other instruments in the band, ex. Eleanor Rigby, can’t be played using multiple players.

5.  With certain albums being such ground-breaking albums like the White Album or Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Heart’s Club Band, there’s no reason why these entire albums shouldn’t be available for download.

The final song list for the game is far from complete, but I’m just stating my opinion as what I think should be on there.  At the very least, all 27 #1 singles should be on there.  If anything just to give the band justice for the masterpieces they created.

L4D2 doubles preorder of original, argument FOR the sequel

l4d21
Left 4 Dead 2 has become pretty infamous in the gaming world since it’s announcement at E3, never before has a sequel to a game generated so much negative buzz for begin released “too early”. Fans of L4D started a petition against purchasing the sequel when the game was announced, their argument begin that the original will be forgotten with no new content, and that most of the new features in the L4D2 could have been made available to part 1 through DLC. Well the petition which claimed to have several thousand signatures seems to have made little impact because Valve has just announced that the Left 4 Dead 2 has doubled the preorders that the original had. Keep in mind however that L4D was an original title and therefore didn’t have any fanbase to build those preorders off from when it was originally announced.

Now I know I’ll most likely get flamed for this but I’m actually going to defend Valve on L4D2. First of all Valve has made huge waves in the video game world from the original Half-Life to the Team-Fortress series, to Portal, if there’s any developer I trust it’s Valve. I know every time I reach for a game with the Valve logo on it I’m in for a quality gaming experience. For those who say that there is no need for L4D2 and that everything in the game could be done with DLC don’t you think that all of that stuff would approach the $60 price tag? The sequel promises the ability to use melee weapons, that’s a whole new gameplay mechanic, no developer would release that for free. Then there’s the new levels, at E3 Valve announced that L4D2 would have 5 stages, that would be about $10 each right there. Lets also not forget that the new game still probably has some features that have yet to be shown, so L4D2 looks like it’ll be worth the price.

So why do thousand’s of gamers don’t want the sequel? It seems like its more for the reason of feeling abandoned. The gaming world is filled with crappy sequels and casual games, but sometimes we get treated to an original title that reminds us of why we play video games and right away we feel connected to it and we know that there are developers out there who are thinking about us, the “core” gamer. Now all of a sudden the once original and unique game will simply become the first in a line of “rehashed” sequels only to be forgotten, just like every other video game out there. But it’s Valve here, this isn’t an average developer they know what they are doing and they have said that the original L4D will have it’s own line up of content soon. So I think we should warm up to the idea that a new wave of zombie destruction awaits the gaming community with Nick, Rochelle, Coach, and Ellis.

First Look: Lost Planet 2 Xbox 360 / PS3

Lost Planet: Extreme Condition back in January 2007 brought us a new IP from Capcom. It gave us a fresh experience from third person shooters; Being able to control mech’s and vehicles alike to take down the enemy in the games ice age conditions. Thats why consumers will be eager to get they’re hands on Lost Planet 2 and is easily becoming one of the most anticipated games in the office this year. Everything you can expect from the first game is back along with some groundbreaking features such as the the 4 player co-op play. Now this isn’t the 4 player co-op we’ve been used to this console generation. Delivering a co-op mode which sets you up in a small map to defeat countless enemies such as Gears of War 2’s horde mode or Call of Duty World at War zombie survival mode. This looks to set the bar of what 4 player co-op can do by pitting the entire single player campaign in 4 player co-op. We’ll give more on its online features and campaign settings as it comes in, for now enjoy a taste of what this game has to offer.

Review: Ghostbusters Provides Story/Co-Op Online Play

Ghostbusters_COVERPS3OOPS1208
The new Ghostbusters game surprised many people. I think many people expected a game to bring people back to their childhood, and attempt to recapture some of the glory the Ghostbusters movies had many years ago. Those same people, I think, were very surprised. The story line places you in the Ghostbusters firehouse as a new recruit. You have the task of being the guinea pig, testing new proton-pack technologies as you patrol New York City for ghosts. The story-line seems to take place right after the second Ghostbusters movie ends, incorporating characters and ghosts from both movies in the game.

The online gameplay is very solid. Although there isn’t a co-op career mode, players can join with three other players to do co-op games that have competitive scoring. There are several different games that can be played online that require you to play a certain way. Your rank is attributed to the cash you make catching ghosts and completing games. As you move up in rank, you get a new title, and eventually new uniforms.

The gameplay itself is extremely fun. The game plays as a 3rd person shooter in a way but it doesn’t seem like your typical run and gun shooter. That can be attributed to the extremely entertaining script and well told story line. Harold Ramis and Dan Aykroyd both contributed to the script as well as provided the voiceovers for the game, which adds to the genuine feel of it.

The game has very solid graphics, with the characters portraying the actors’ likeness back when the movies were released.  The mixtures of dark settings with the brightness of the proton-pack blast really add to the visuals.  The gameplay itself is pretty solid, it takes a few minutes to get used to venting your pack before overheating, but other than that, the game uses the two-analog controls similar to most shooter games.  The game also has a decent replay value.  About halfway through the career mode you realize that you need to search for relics and scan all the ghost to add to the spirit guide for a trophy/accomplishment.

The game itself can stand alone as a great game, but with the new hype of a third Ghostbusters movie in production, it also serves as an appetizer for what’s to come. I, for one, can’t wait to get the main course.

Overall Rating = 8.5
