The most memorable opening scenes

Video games are much like books and movies—the very beginning has a big impact on the audience. The opening scene sets the feel and pacing of the quest, and is that split second after the intro movie (if there is one) is done when players are first given control of their character. They have that one moment to locate themselves on screen and take in their surroundings. They take a breath, and then take their first step on the adventure ahead of them. They don’t know what to expect, what kind of baddies and bosses await, but they’re eager and ready. Although there are many video games that have a forgettable or perhaps generic beginning, some titles stand out from the crowd. These games have unique and distinguished opening scenes, so much so that the initial frame has been embedded into gamers heads and have become instantly recognizable. Here are some of the most memorable opening scenes in gaming.

zelda1

Legend of Zelda

The original Zelda is a very classic title in video game history. Countless gamers have experienced Link’s first steps; the interesting thing being that they found themselves in the middle of nowhere. The player is given no items, weapons, abilities, or even a sense of which way to go; the last especially confusing due to three different paths that were before the hero. However everyone would always see a door way, and although nothing told you to go in there, many people went through the door way with the hopes of some sort of help. Gamers already knew this wasn’t going to be a straight forward adventure.

mgs

Metal Gear Solid 2

/What made MGS2 stand out was its very cinematic presentation— this fact is clear as soon as the player starts the game. /As the game begins, Snake is seen walking across the Washington Bridge in the rain. All of a sudden he breaks out to a run, turns on his stealth camouflage, and jumps to a tanker passing by below. Snake lands on the boat, breaking his stealth mechanism, and the title comes on screen. The hero runs to a corner before being seen by the boat’s crew, and receives a mission briefing from Otacon. After Snake’s conversation is done, the camera fixes on the character. Many players just stood there admiring the weather effects—the rain and wind seemed much more realistic than in any game anyone had seen up until that point in gaming history, gamers didn’t realize that they had taken control of Snake, but when they were done gawking at the graphics, they took their first step into Snake’s quest.

ffvii

Final Fantasy VII

FF VII has one of the most memorable openings, not only in the Final Fantasy series, but in RPGs in general. Where most Role-Playing games opened up in a quite town, castle, or house, FF VII started you right off in the beginning of an assault. The opening cinematic started with Aeris, of one the main characters of the game, in an alley. The camera zooms away from the girl to reveal an industrial city, and the title then comes on screen for a moment. The attention is then focused on a speeding train. The train stops at a station where two guards are on patrol. Several rebel fighters jump off the train and knock out the guards. One of the rebels look back at the train and signals to the main character. A spiky haired character is then seen jumping off the train. He’s told by the rebel: “Come on newcomer, follow me”. The player takes control of the main character and follows the rebel’s orders.

re2

Resident Evil 2

RE2 was the sequel to the popular Resident Evil, the original had brought survival horror to main stream gaming, so there was plenty of hype surrounding RE2. The intro of the two games are very different—where the first game started you off in a quiet dining room of a creepy mansion, RE2 started you off right after a truck collision. The main characters, both being newcomers to the infested city, find out that Raccoon City had been overrun by zombies. They decide to make a break for it in a truck, and of course, they get attacked by a zombie inside the vehicle and collide with a brick wall. The truck catches on fire and splits the two main characters up, and it’s at this point where the player take control. The player sees that the streets are on fire, and that several zombies are already making there way to them. The player is forced to start the game with a hand gun, some ammo, and a will to survive. RE2 really gave gamers an intense intro, and it is still memorable.

bio

Bioshock

Another intense opening, only added upon by the fact that the camera is through the main character’s eyes. It’s 1960, and you’re on a small plane smoking a cigarette, and looking at a mysterious picture. A loud explosion booms from the plane, and you fall out of the sky, plunging into the icy waters below. The title briefly appears, and you find yourself struggling in the water. You see luggage and other items floating around you, and then a portion of the plane which you were just in sinks past you, into the darkness of the ocean beneath you. The player struggles up to the surface taking his first breath, only to see that he’s surrounded by fire and that he’s the only survivor. The player takes control and swims away from the burning wreckage in silence, and heads into an underwater city.

mario

Super Mario Bros.

If you call yourself a gamer then you’ve experienced this opening scene. No opening movie is needed, no back story is ever delivered, and no options are given. You find yourself as a pint sized plumber on the left side of the screen, a row of bushes are before you and a single cloud is in the sky. The floor beneath is a red brick pattern, and the sky above is a very light blue. The unmistakable melody is playing in the background, you press the right direction on your d-pad and take your first steps, not only into Super Mario Bros., but into modern gaming history.

MLB 09: The Show Review

mlbshow

Swinging for the fences.

The dawning of a new era of baseball is upon us, at least for baseball fans in New York.  MLB 09: The Show premiers the newest prides of New York; Citi Field and Yankee Stadium.  The interesting (and humorous) thing about this is that the game was released prior to opening day, so technically we could play in the new stadiums before they could (somebody tell Ryan Church that the right field overhang takes some getting used to…)
From the beginning, MLB 09: The Show opens each time with a different “Then & Now” video showcasing the different positions throughout history, often times linking players like Cy Young with Johan Santana, giving gamers a brief history lesson, and a new appreciation for the sport.
The staple for the MLB franchise, Road To The Show, has been tweaked with new improvements like batting practice and base running practice.  These “drills” are requested by your manager through several parts of the season and help in increasing your attributes.  The attribute system itself has also been revamped.  This year, if your power level is only a 45, you will be lucky to hit 5 homeruns the entire season.  The fielding engine has also been tweaked; no longer are the fielders able to make “impossible” plays if the ball is hit close to them.  Infielders play balls to the side, reacting more to how hard the ball is hit.  Outfielders now take a better line in fielding groundballs (instead of a straight line, they get behind the ball to make a strong throw back to the infield.)  Also incorporated into this years MLB title are the subtleties of Major League Baseball that many people aren’t aware of; the Rule 5 draft, arbitration, etc…
New to the game this year is the online league mode.  Now a player can control a team in a league online, with every team having the possibility of being represented by a player.  Also incorporated is a draft, allowing you to build your team with new players.  The online game play, however, is lacking a bit.  Even under strong connections, the game tends to lag a lot making hitting close to impossible.  But aside from that the online play is a nice feature.
The graphics this year are phenomenal.  With the exception of a few quirks here or there, collision issues, random bat-in-forearm-itus, or similar crowd visuals, the game looks very visually solid.  The game presentation provides a sense and feel of a real MLB game, showing realistic cut scenes and commentary that make the game play more enjoyable.
Overall, I would say that this year’s title is an improvement from last years, which showing the success of last year’s title, is quite an accomplishment.  With a few visual quirks worked out and the reduction of lag online, this could very well be one of the best baseball games ever.

Target pays you to buy video games

target041609

An interesting piece of news, Target is now offering pre-order cards for $1. Not only does this reserve your game but they’re also giving you a $5 gift card when you swing by to pick up your game. Not exactly the craziest deal ever but I think it can help the giant a lot in it’s sales, especially in these economic times. Where most gamers pick up their products online or at a little store called Gamestop, the major retailers are definitely trying what they can to get people to shop at their stores. So what do you think? Is this promotion going to be enough to get you to spend your money at Target? Or will you pass this marketing attempt by the sales giant?

What’s Wrong With Luigi?

luigiwhatswrong

Mario is one of the biggest characters in gaming history, this can not be disputed by any fanboy or hater. Mario is a short, fat hero who has saved the princess and the mushroom kingdom countless times. His courage is great and his strength seemingly unlimited, he’s conquered hordes of koopa troopers and goombas, and has traveled everywhere from ice mountains to Bowser’s fire filled castle. Yes, Mario is an icon in gaming history but what about his brother? Let us take a look at who is the brother of this legend and what has his role been in the video game world.

The first memory many of us have of Luigi is from the original Mario Bros. here he was literally Mario’s clone except in green as opposed to his brothers red clothes. This model was used again in Super Mario Bros, he was no different from Mario. But then we got a slight change in Super Mario Bros. 2. Here he was distinctly taller than Mario and was able to jump much higher. This general form of the younger brother becomes his standard look later on in future games. Oddly enough in Super Mario Bros. 3 Luigi went back to being Mario’s clone, being exactly like Mario in size, shape and abilities. However after the NES, the Mario Bros. 2 design of a tall and lanky Luigi stays with the character. He then later appears in a few SNES games with nothing special about him other then the fact that he was simply Mario’s younger brother, but then things started getting strange.

One of the early signs was in the Super Smash Bros series, in the title every character had a taunt, Mario would grow in size as if he got a mushroom, while others would strike a pose or do something intimidating. Luigi’s taunt was him putting his hands behind his back and kicking the ground like a little kid. Not very intimidating or does it make much sense but it doesn’t stop there. One of his attacks was him running at his opponents and flailing his hands around in the spirit of a schoolgirl. Another attack is that he uses his ass against his opponents. Let’s think about this for a moment, he throws his ass out to attack people, something is wrong here. Furthermore he has another trick where he can launch him self like a bullet, he charges up this move by squatting down like he’s got to let out a mean fart. Now this might seem normal it is after all a Nintendo fighter, so things can get a little goofy but when has Luigi been capable of this, how does he do it? On top of all this a few of Luigi’s celebration moves also border on the side of the strange. Where Mario does a cool trick with a fireball or Link shows off his sword after a victory from a match. Luigi is depicted falling over with his hands to his side, another has him throwing wussy punches at the air and then breathing hard. Anyone think this is strange yet? What were the designers thinking of when they decided on all this: Hey you know what lets have him fight like a girl!

A true ass
A true ass

Then there’s the other aspect of Mario’s unappreciated brother Nintendo has given: he his an idiot who should not be taken seriously. In the gamecube title Paper Mario and The Thousand Year Door, Mario goes on an adventure to collect the star pieces, and save the world. He gets the help of the locals in the places he travels characters like a goomba, koopa trooper join Mario in the hopes of going on an adventure and helping out their hero. Later on the adventure Mario comes across Luigi at several points through out the game with partners of his own, it is here where the young brother tells him that he’s also on an adventure to save the waffle kingdom’s princess eclair. The problem is that Luigi is a terrible adventurer he ends up hurting his partners or screwing them over in some way. One character, a blopper tells Mario that his brother tripped and pushed the poor creature in lava! freaking lava! That’s one of the most messed up things anyone can do to anyone! Another character, a bob-bomb tells how he is scarred by the sight of seeing Luigi dressed as a bride, the brother having done this to setup a sneak attack on an evil boss. I have no comment for this particular story. The story goes on and on with Luigi being unaware of his actions to his partners. My question is why is Luigi being made into this fool of a character? He’s not taken seriously in the least bit.

Even when Luigi gets his own game to star in he is a scared and seemingly weak character. In Luigi’s Mansion, Mario is captured by Bowser and it’s up to Luigi to save him. The brother walks around a haunted house with a flashlight and vacuum cleaner, shaking and calling out for his brother. He jumps in fear when any of the wacky looking ghosts pop out, very unhero like. At the end of the game Luigi finally saves his brother who had been trapped in a painting. The painting with Mario is then put through a machine that brings him back to normal form, the poor brother is spat out from the contraption dazed and confused. Does Luigi go up to Mario and help him up? No he points and laughs at his brother who seems to be suffering massive head trauma! check out the video Not only is Luigi a scared wuss, he is also an ass!

Through the years Luigi has went from being Mario’s clone to a very distinct character. One who fights like a little girl, gets scared like one, and is an ass. Interesting traits for gaming’s biggest icon’s brother but Nintendo needs to stop this nonsense with the young plumber, he needs to be taken a little more seriously, he deserves this much.

Throwing a party? Bring out the video games.

So your planning a little get together or maybe a big party? Having video games available to your guests has become extremely common today, in recent years the “Party” genre of video games has grown exponentially. Knowing what games to get are important, they have to be easy to pick up and play, yet challenging enough to get everyone interested and competing against one another. Here are a few games that will add a whole new level of excitement to your party.

If you have a Wii then you have plenty of options, Nintendo’s system is sometimes coined the “party system” and there is a very good reason for that. The controls are easy for a lot of games and promotes physical activity. The first game on the list dosen’t even need purchasing, Wii Sports comes with every shiny new Wii. The game, although a tech-demo can provide a lot of gaming entertainment for your guests. At the top is Wii Bowling, 4 players can play this simple yet competitive game and you don’t even need 4 controllers for everyone to play. Wii Tennis Baseball, and Golf are also good choices where anyone can play, Boxing requires two full controllers and a lot of moving around so it’s not advisable especially if you have a lot of guests. Next is Mario Party 8, this game traditionally takes about an hour for a full play however there’s a mini-game mode too so you set up a system where everyone plays one game and passes, overall MP8 is great whether your with a few friends or a lot people. Wario Ware: Smooth Moves is another title that consists of mini-games as well, which also gets a recommendation.

If you have an Xbox 360 there are no shortages of party games. You can always try for shooters like Halo 3 and Call of Duty. These games might not be for everyone at your gathering so you might want to make sure that its cool with those who want to play. If you want something simpler there are plenty of Xbox live games like TMNT, and Castle Crashers, which allow 4 players to team up. If you want something even more simple then there’s Scene It?, the game comes with 4 “buzzer” controllers so in case you don’t want to buy extra controllers which are $50, this game is for you.

The PS3 has some options with party games as well. Little Big Planet can be virtually any kind of game you want it to be, up to 4 players can team up or compete in a variety of several types of games. As with Xbox 360 there are also plenty of shooters that make for some fun multiplayer action. Then there are the music games, Rock Band and Guitar Hero can be found on all three consoles, all of these games are excellent choices when it comes to bringing your friends together. Those who heard of the phenomena of these music games but never played will have a chance to try it out, while maybe someone at your party is a pretty good singer and can show off a little to your friends. There are many of possibilities with these music games.

And there you have it, a few games that will ensure that your party guest will have plenty to remember after the night is done, and be asking you when’s the next one.

What games are coming out for PS3?

ps3

Ok I have a lot of respect for Sony, don’t get me wrong. They played a huge role in the gaming industry with the Psone and PS2, but I have to say Sony’s latest system is not very appealing to me. It’s expensive for one, but more importantly than that there hasn’t been too many exclusive games on it that really have that system seller feel to it. This is not my opinion alone, the market has left the electronics giant in last place in the console wars since it’s release. Having said that I’ll admit the console does have some interesting games on it’s line up, these up coming titles could help Sony a lot, here are a few.

Infamous
Sony has been pushing this one for months now, an open world game that puts you in the shoes of an everyday man with some not so everyday powers. The title also allows you to use your abilities for good or evil, giving you a sense of responsibility for the world you inhabit. Infamous also puts you up against what is said to be iconic villains. At this point not much is known about the story or even some of the gameplay mechanics. But with what we know now the game looks like a lot of fun. You can look for it in June 2009.

Ratchet and Clank: A Crack in Time
The direct squeal to the franchise’s previous title Ratchet and Clank: Future Tools of Destruction and Quest for Booty. A Crack in Time promises many of the same gameplay fans have grown to love about the series, however it will also introduce new content such as space battles and will continue the now epic story of the two characters while also revealing some of the overall series mysteries. Look for it in the 3rd quarter of 2009.

Uncharted 2
The first Uncharted game is one of the great exclusive titles for Sony’s system. Featuring cinematic graphics, tight gameplay and an interesting story, Drake’s Fortune was a hit. The sequel seems to expand on the previous game in almost every aspect. However now your taken from the green jungles to the concrete kinds, Uncharted 2 puts you in several run down cities, changing the franchises feel significantly. Another major game mechanic is the ability to choose between stealth and simply running and gunning, this time around Drake will face even more opponents so your choices will have a big impact on how you experience the game. Uncharted 2 is set for the third quarter of 2009.

God of War III
Arguably one of the biggest titles on Sony’s line up is Kratos’s latest outing. The original GOW and it’s sequel were two huge additions to the PS2’s already big library. Both title’s pushed the system to it’s graphical limits, and both delivered gameplay that’s was purely an adrenaline rush. Fighting a wide range of mythological beasts Kratos became the ultimate bad ass in the video game industry. Now GOW III will put you up against even more creatures and even bigger bosses. This one is a given if you own a PS3.

And there you have it a few games I think are going to play major parts in Sony’s struggle to reach the top of the console market. It has a long way to go but Sony is determined and with Sony’s track record, will be a major contender in the gaming industry for many years.

What games are coming up for Xbox 360?

xbox360

It seems as though Microsoft’s gaming system always has several games that are on the horizon of being released, however if you’ve already beaten Resident Evil 5, and Halo Wars then you might be thinking what next? Well there are plenty of games on the release calender, and here are just a few I picked out that I think are going to stand above the other titles.

Red Faction: Guerrilla
The original Red Faction was released for the PS2 early on the last-gen machine’s cycle. The main draw of the title was it’s destructible environments. Taking place in the underground mines of Mars, players were able to dig, and blow up the landscape as they pleased. Metal door locked? No problem, just plant a grenade on the rock surrounding it. Enemies coming your way on a bridge? Just aim your rocket launcher at the floor. The latest title looks to take these gaming dynamics and expand on them, giving you the ability to destroy practically anything in the game. This definitely a game to keep your sights on.

Prototype
An open world game taking place in New York City, Prototype is one of the few titles coming out for Xbox 360 that is completely original. Similar to other open world games like Grand Theft Auto, Prototype allows you to roam New York City and lets you do whatever you want in it. However the similarities stop there, as in the world of Prototype an infection has taken over New York City and you as the player are some how connected to it all. Your character wakes up to find super natural strength, speed, and other abilities. Fighting both the military and hordes of infected creatures the player must find out the answers to the infection and his own power before New York is completely destroyed.

Halo 3: ODST
An expansion to the Xbox’s biggest franchise, Halo 3:ODST doesn’t put you in the role of master chief but a lowly marine. Meaning you won’t be able to do the crazy stunts that the green spartan can do. Not much is known about the game now but you can be sure that bungie is putting plenty of effort into this title.

Modern Warfare 2
Another title where not much is known now. However not much needs to be known to see that this title will be wildly popular. Sequel to Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare which broke many records on Xbox Live, beating even the machine’s flagship title Halo 3 in number of online matches for months. Modern Warfare 2 will most likely expand on all those things you loved about the first including slick graphics, addictive gameplay, and a great multiplayer experience.

What games are coming up for the Wii?

wiicontroller

If your like me you like the Wii and think it has the ability to be one of the greatest consoles in gaming history. If your also like me then you think that Nintendo has barely tapped into Wii’s potential. Now here we are, ignoring the console we once looked toward so eagerly.  Our consoles have been collecting dust, having barely played any games since Smash Brothers or Wii Fit. Some have been considering selling their machine. Well you might want to reconsider that, because Nintendo hasn’t forgotten about the core gamers and there are several games in the big N’s lineup that might very well put the wii-mote back into your hands.

Mad World
I included this title knowing it has already been released but that’s how much I wanted to talk about Mad World. Released back in mid March the bloody game has gotten many good reviews. It’s graphics are very unique and stylized, almost reminiscent of Frank Miller’s Sin City. On top of the quality in it’s presentation, Mad World also has great gameplay utilizing the Wii-mote in fun and exciting ways. You will walk away from Mad World feeling like you truly experienced a game unlike any other on the market, I definitely recommend the title especially if your primary console is the Wii. It’s loaded with blood and gore so it is for the mature Nintendo crowd (if your out there).

Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Echos of Time
Now don’t stop reading when I tell you this is also coming out on the DS and is also an emulation of that game. It is easy to dismiss squarenix’s dungeon crawler but give it a chance you might actually enjoy it. It supports up to 4 players on both DS and the Wii, and even cross system support, giving you a lot of flexibility on how you play the game. The graphics are surprising not that bad considering it is the game on the DS, coupled with classic squarenix quality music, a final fantasy theme, and 4 player dungeon crawling gameplay, Echos of Time is shaping up to become a solid title.

Punch-Out!!
One of Nintendo’s most classic games will make a long overdue appearance on the Wii in the Spring. Punch-Out promises the same old school gameplay with updated graphics and controls. Once again you play as Little Mac a young boxer who goes against a wide range of opponents from old favorites like King Hippo to new characters like Disco Kid. The visuals look very polished and the Wii remote’s motion sensors seem to work nicely. This is a Wii title that can appeal to both gaming vet’s and newbies alike.

Klonoa
For those who didn’t get a chance to play the original back in 1997 your in for a treat. Klonoa was considered one of the performers of the PlayStation era. Now on the Wii it’s getting a face lift in graphics and gameplay, while staying true to the original. The game manages to be modern and nostalgic at the same time, going back to the 2D games in 3D age. Klonoa can do many of the classic platforming moves like jumping, grabbing and throwing enemies. For those who are looking for a classic platformer but don’t have those old systems anymore Klonoa for the Wii might interest you.

Wii Sports Resort
Ok I might get knocked for this one being that the release date isn’t clear, nor are many of the games and features. But one thing you know Nintendo is pouring their quality into is Wii Sports Resort. To this day many people still play the Original Wii Sports which shows the quality yet universal simplicity of the game. The game is also supposed to make use of  MotionPlus which plugs into your Wii-mote for 1:1 accuracy. If there are still many people playing the original the sequel will sure to please fans for a while.

And there you have it, a few games coming out for Nintendo’s insanely popular system. Sure it might not exactly be robust but one thing that is promising is that you can look toward a unique gaming experience from Nintendo.
