Prototype 2 Review

There used to be a inflation for open world environment games but we seemed to have gotten less and less of that. Selective titles with more punch have come out making the experience all the more worth it. In 2009 we got Prototype, the open world super ability antihero game. Vengeance and destruction was the name of the game and it felt good doing it. Three years later and we are getting the sequel to it, what has changed? Not to much which is good and bad.

Our new hero .. or lack there of is Sgt. James Heller, thought to be protecting the city only to find his wife and kid murdered from its chaotic state. Seeking full vengeance for the one he claims responsible Alex Mercer, he then finds out that this is bigger then he could imagine. The answers he seeks are within the heads of the military and scientists claiming to try and stop this outbreak. Alex gives him the same gene infection to do just that.

The abilities you receive are almost identical to Alex. Taking down enemies and completing missions will give you experience which can be used to gain new moves. Different moves can be somewhat mapped to the controller giving you new ways of taking down foes. It is satisfying to be able to ground pounce and have enemies flying everywhere or grab someone to toss them at a group to explode. Some of these movies are new to Heller like the ability to create a chain reaction bomb which connects everything around the object thrown.

With a little more detail in the city of New York seems the same from before along with the whole game. It seems to handle more things on screen with more destruction happening at once. Enemies can get very big in the game which is handled nicely by the games engine. My big issues come from the actual missions of the game. They seem repetitive in nature as you go in to military bases taking on disguises from enemies you devour or go to a heavily guided target to seek the information within them. There are a few unlockables here and there to get access to a stronger Heller for more destruction. With a slew of side missions to keep the action going .

Prototype 2 does everything the first game did with a few tweaks. There isn’t much improvement beyond that but it depends on what you are looking for. If your expecting a revelation in the story, your not going to get that. If you are looking for a fun sandbox game or have not played the first one, this will keep you entertain as swatting an object at a helicopter or ripping a tank to pieces can only be seen as awesome.

Minecraft Xbox 360 Review

0

I’m not going to lie when I first heard about Minecraft and its overwhelming success for a game that wasn’t finished yet, I just didn’t get it. The 8 bit 3D look and no real sense of accomplishment left me scratching my head but I soon figured out that it doesn’t matter until you actually play it for yourself. What you have here is no simple port but an enhanced, well cropped experience for the Xbox 360.

Something that should be quickly noted is that this version of the game is not caught up with the PC version and is missing some components. The ability to run, stack food, breed animals and go through jungle terrain is some of what’s missing to name a few. This doesn’t however change the experience of the game for which it is known for and that’s the important part.

Minecraft in itself is a bit hard to describe. There are no checkpoints or main objectives to follow. You make your own rules and goals in the randomly generated worlds. Mining, gathering and building is mainly what you will be doing but as day turns to night one of your goals will be to survive. The name of the game is just simply to do that and how you want to do that is up to you. Shelter as small as a hut or as big as a fortress is all about your will of what to accomplish.

New to the Xbox 360 version are sets of tutorials throughout the game explaining materials, how to create with the workbench or other stations and ingredients for items. Not everything is shown to you however so exploring new possibilities will have to come from what you can imagine. While multiplayer can be achieved in the PC version, the seamless connection you get here is some of the best in any game I’ve seen. Up to eight player multiplayer online or 4 player split screen on one console.

Everything from the subtle tones of music, smooth 60 Frames Per Second gameplay and in n out multiplayer work flawlessly! That’s only the tip of the iceberg as the root of the game is what easily hooks you on this quest of self or group discovery. You can learn something new every second you play and probably will.

Minecraft is one of the most addicting experiences I’ve had with any game. It’s a bit disappointing the Xbox 360 version is a couple of updates behind the PC but it wil most likely get there. Don’t let that stop you from play, as the game isn’t deprived of what you will get right from the start, which is the ability to created something really unique and in your image.

Fable Heroes review

0

It has been awhile since we’ve had a Fable game or have had heard much about the next iteration which is said to be Fable The Journey. In the mean time no one said we can’t have a little fun with the world and characters of Fable in a different setting?

Fable Heroes is a brawler type game with the characters of every Fable to be released, difference is it looks like a puppets play setting which makes everything look adorable. You can go though each stage with up to 3 other friends, battling enemies and gathering coins. While you are playing cooperatively with others or computer characters it does set you up somewhat competitively. After each stage you will be ranked by the amount of coins you’ve gathered from enemies and award for it.

With the coins you are allowed to purchase attributes for your character which will help you in the stages to come. Interestingly enough it is played on a board game, rolling dice to land on a space that corresponds to an attribute that can be collected. The colorful pallet of Fable Heroes is welcomed with the soundtracks fitting to its settings.

Unfortunately while there are some good aspects that have mostly to do with the Fable cast and feel, the game is missing some basic fundamentals. Characters feel a little sluggish and floaty in movement. They also only have three attacks that are on repeat with no formation of any combo or extension to it.

Stages are linear and while they do give you two paths within the stage it never gives you much or a different experience. Character AI is not really benefiting here either as they don’t provide a challenge for coins nor give you real help. The biggest thing that hurts this game is that since not much changes your progression from playing the first stage to playing the last stage isn’t much different.

Fable Heroes was intended to be lighthearted pickup and play game for Xbox Live arcade and it achieves that in ways. It missed it’s chance to be a great and memorable game with some missing components so it’s hard to fully enjoy unless you have 3 friends to play with.

Plantronics Gamecom 780 7.1 Surround Headset Review

The market for gaming headsets is vast, I mean if you search on Google for the term you’ll get a huge return filled with a multitude of different headsets. So what does the Gamecom 780 have that makes it stand out from all the other headsets and how does it stack up to the other headsets on the market?
First impressions are big for anyone and everyone. I mean why would you want to continue using something if it left a bad taste in your mouth? My first impression when I opened up the Gamecom 780 was that it was simple. The packaging was very minimalistic, all that was inside the box was the headset inside it’s plastic display casing, the CD-rom with the drivers and software, and a small folded piece of paper for the warranty information. Plantronics kept everything that you don’t need out of the box just to keep costs down, and with a $80 price tag, I think they did a pretty damn good job to keep more money in my pocket. The Gamecom 780 looks impressive. The head strap has an engraved Gamecom logo with burgundy accents around the cloth earpods. At first the headset looked bulky and heavy, but looks are deceiving. The headset is actually really light. To my surprise when I picked it up, I thought that the earpod that was hanging would pull down one side of the headset, but the headset barely distorts. The headset has very little to it. On the left earpod it’s got a stiff swinging microphone, a Dolby 7.1 surround on/off button on the front (drivers need to be installed from the CD before full Dolby 7.1 surround sound can be used), a mic mute switch, and volume wheel on the back.
The headset feels snug when you put it on. The soft cloth around the ears take a little getting used to since most headsets usually come with that leatherette wrapped cushioning, but after a while they feel very comfortable. You would think after hours of gaming your ears would get warm and sweaty but for some reason the square design of the earpods gives enough room keep your ears cool. Besides the fact that they fit great, they sound amazing. Great highs, lows, and midrange audio levels, with enough bass kick to keep most gamers happy. Having the volume at about 30% kept my ears happy, anything more than 50% I’m afraid of going deaf or my ears to start bleeding. Even with the sound at low volume, the Gamecom 780 has great output and sound quality. One thing I did notice is that the headphones are not noise-canceling, so you’ll still be able to listen to your annoying family members nag you about how loud you’re screaming into your noise-canceling mic even though your friends wont be able to hear your family.
A great thing about the 780’s was the fact that when you need to take a break, the earcups rotate flat so when they’re around your neck you aren’t being choked. Plantronics definitely had comfort and sound in mind when creating the Gamecom 780’s. The only real gripe I have with them are the short two meter cord, and not having more bass available. The headsets still sound great but it feels like it’s just missing that deep boom whenever an explosion occurs. All in all the Gamecom 780 is a great buy especially with just a $80 price tag, if you’re in the market for a 7.1 Dolby headset with a low price don’t think twice about any other headsets since this is definitely the one to buy without a doubt!

The Walking Dead: The Game – Episode 1 Review

Is it me or does any game related to a series or movie only work when it is not a direct adaptation? Even with that there is no guarantee the game will be any good, all you can do is have your fingers crossed. Looks like the partial carpal tunnel I was experiencing from crossing my fingers since The Walking Dead’s game announcement is not in vein … Telltale games has created a satisfying and rich experience that not only fans of the series will love but anyone that can physically pick up a controller.

What we have here is episode one of a five part episodic adventure game that will be delivered across weeks to come. Dubbed A New Day the setting seems to be the beginning of the zombie apocalypse which is sometime before the actual show begins. You play as Lee which by forces out of his control (not sure if a zombie crossing the highway counts) grants him a get out of jail free card .. literally. You come across a helpless girl Clementine, which has been alone since this mess started. Deciding to go at it together they now seek the aid of others to find safety.

The Walking Dead game takes less of an approach to chopping off heads, firing endless rounds at zombies and trying to look cool doing it but offers power through speech. Dialogue is your biggest tool here as you will need it to make tough decisions while shaping choices others will make that surround you. Multiple play through’s in this scenario is not only encouraged it becomes almost necessary for those looking to see all the choices that can be made. Whether you want Lee to become a character that will help others or help himself it is up to you.

While talking is most of what you will do that doesn’t mean you don’t get to bash the heads in of zombies. Much like Telltale’s other games this is a point and click style of adventure but the controls have been retooled a bit to fit a faster pace of action. Moving him with the left analogue stick and looking around to interact with the right works very well and keeps the frantic mayhem right where it needs to be.

If I didn’t emphasize before on how important the decisions that you make are well let me refresh you. Characters beyond this chapter will remember information you chose to tell them or withhold from them. This is only episode one but we are eagerly awaiting the others to be released as this is just as exciting as the show itself. Each episode will run you $5 or 400 MS points on Xbox 360 with a season pass running you $25 for all platforms aside Xbox 360. This is a must have for fans and gamers who want to try something different from their FPS routine.

Bloodforge Review

0

XBLA titles have grown from its original conception. A little after the birth of the Xbox 360 they were only allowed a limited size amount to be made with. This led to restrictive development although very interesting games to be released. With most of that has been lifted today production value for some titles are on the quality of full fledge titles. This is no exception for Bloodforge, a third person action hack n slash that makes it’s way onto XBLA. Unfortunately there are issues surrounding the game that plague it from delivering something really worth holding on to.

You are Crom, a Celtic warrior who seeks revenge for the ones responsible for making him kill his wife. He his then led by a god to go after the one he is after. The premise should already sound too familiar as it’s a series that still goes on today. Although the story is meant to engage you and almost feel the pain for Crom it doesn’t. Cut Scenes are done well which does keep you immerse in the experience.

The unique graphical art style and color pallet really do the game justice. The world is vibrant in it’s dark shadow portrayal. The game is also known for its gore which it does not leave any shortage of. Most of what you’ll see is black and white with red all over.

The combat system is the games main draw and it does deliver on some aspects. Providing some different weapons variant, power ups and collectables it does try to keep the repetitiveness from a hack n slash to a minimal. Bosses while far and in between look good and are mostly different in nature. There is also the ability to battle your friends likeness online for leaderboard scores after sections in the game which is a pretty cool feature, unless no one you know has the game rendering it useless.

This is not without its flaws and this has some that keep the game from performing at it’s best. The camera system in this game is by far a real travesty. It seems to be physically tethered behind you and doesn’t know how to keep up with the action. Not to mention rocking left, right, up and down with every bump. The game also suffers from glitches that sometimes make it hard to downright play. Characters disappearing, unable to hit or be hit and my favorite the double roll ..

Bloodforge has redeeming qualities and being unique of it’s kind on Xbox Live Arcade is a plus. However the amount of issues the game suffers with and not to mention the story that has been told before makes it hard to enjoy the way you should. The production value and flashy moves alone make it worth taking a look at but for 1200 MS point’s its a toss up.

MLB 12 The Show Review

Major League Baseball’s spring training is amongst us again and once again, the millions of fans can enjoy America’s Pastime. It also marks the release of MLB 12 The Show. The Show’s dominance in the baseball gaming genre is once again unchallenged with the release of their latest installment.

One of the best things about this version of The Show isn’t even part of the game; it’s the commercial. For those who haven’t seen it, it begins with the announcement that the Chicago Cubs won the World Series and everyone goes crazy. Celebrations and riots occur until we see the celebration taking place in the game of The Show, and the gamer with a single tear roll down his cheek. Tagline: So real, it’s unreal. Go ahead, I dare you, if you’re a true sports fan, watch that commercial without getting a little choked up. Excellent marketing plan.
Now onto the game itself: along with fine-tuning the graphics, there is a laundry list of new features in the 2012 title:

• Pulse Pitching – This interface builds off of the classic pitching style. Players still use the “X” button to pitch, but they must time the press with an on-screen display to ensure pitch accuracy.
• Diamond Dynasty Mode – Similar to the regular Dynasty Mode, the Diamond Dynasty Mode is an online exclusive mode where players can create their
own team name, uniforms and logo with over 100 customizations. Players collect baseball cards, which act as the players on their active roster. Players can also play the computer in games to earn more cards to boost their team (Think EA Sports’ Ultimate Team mode).

• Road to the Show – The flagship feature of The Show returns for the fifth installment and just like the other four, it is extremely deep and keeps the player coming back for more. For those who don’t know how the RTTS mode works, you create a player, assign attributes, equipment, positions, etc… then either enter the draft or chose a team’s association to join. Once a part of the organization, you are sent to the minors and begin your journey to make it to the Major League team of your organization, aka The Show. This year, you are the top recruited prospect and automatically become the starter at your position at the AA level. Training has also been revamped allowing for different training modes to allow for maximum growth for your player. The player creator also received some improvements by adding new accessories
to add to your player.
• True Ball Physics – Anybody who’s played baseball knows the spin of the ball determines a lot; where the ball will travel in the air, the direction when it bounces, and how fast it travels on the ground. The Show now incorporates realistic ball physics and proper spins for balls that bounce off the bases, or hit off the end of the bat
• Playstation Move Compatible – For the first time, you can use the Playstation Move controller through all modes of the game; pitching, hitting, fielding, and running the bases.
• SimulView Functionality with PlayStation 3D Display – The Show will incorporate SimulView technology that allows two people to play head to head without seeing each other’s sceen while playing on the PlayStation 3D Display. It uses the same technology as Stereoscopic 3D, but instead of sending image A to the left eye and image B to the right eye, the game sends image A to player 1 and image B to player 2.

Overall, once again, The Show took their already successful franchise and made it even better. There are many other features that were added to the overall gameplay that make this the most authentic feeling sports game, not just for baseball, but for all sports. It may not have the hype that Madden or NCAA Football has, but this game is a major player in the sporting world. And it easily is one of the best Playstation exclusive games left.

PAX East 2012: Ghost Recon Future Soldier

0

The very first game that I got to play at PAX East was Ghost Recon Future Soldier, I mean how can you not? One of the most anticipated FPS games that combines co-op, camouflage, drones,  grenades that mark targets, and Gunsmithing (Xbox 360) all wrapped up into one game. At PAX East we got to play the multiplayer mode Guerrilla, which is similar to Horde in Gears of War 3 where you fight wave after wave of enemy AI with upto three friends. The first wave you’re required to assassinate a group of enemy soldiers to take over a certain area of the map which will be considered your HQ. The following waves after you’re required to keep the HQ secure and keep the enemy soldiers from recapturing that one area.

Game play feels very tight, crouch to auto activate camouflage and press A to duck into cover. Firing is pretty straight forward, hold to go full auto or tap to semi-fire, of course tapping would be best because close quarters combat tends to get you into trouble. Instead of kill streaks in Guerilla mode, players are given Wave Streaks. Survive a few waves without dying and you’ll be given certain perks, like UAV drone, or camouflage for 30 seconds. If you aren’t able to survive and die in a wave, don’t worry it’s not game over yet. If you die you come back as a UAV Drone. You get to hover around the battlefield marking your targets for your teammates. This is one game to be sure to look out for next month. Ghost Recon Future Soldier is set to release on May 22 on Xbox 360, PC, and Playstation 3.

Mad Catz Street Fighter X Tekken Fight Stick Pro Review

I’m a huge fan of the fighting genre and can remember in the 90’s heading to my local laundromats and video stores to play on the arcade machines. Of course I was just a couple of feet tall then and was looking to spend every quarter I can find for the mere gratification of honing my skills better then anyone else. Although this addiction led me to purchase most fighters as soon as they were available on a physical format (imported versions of the Street Fighter vs series for the Sega Saturn is no exception), I never seem to be able to get that real arcade feeling though. This was especially troubling during the years where arcades weren’t the go to and fighting games would come straight to consoles.

Madcatz introduced their line of fight sticks back when Capcom released the return of the Street Fighter franchise, Street Fighter IV. Not only was the game a success, the fight sticks broke new ground for arcade type play in the household. This year is no exception as Madcatz has not only been continuing this trend but has put some new additions. We were sent one of their Street Fighter X Tekken Fight Stick Pro for the Xbox 360 and here are my thoughts.

Here are a list of features stated by Madcatz:

Authentic Japanese-style Joystick & Buttons

8-Button Layout with Additional Multi-Speed Turbo Functionality

Premium-Quality Components with Genuine Arcade Layout

Controller Lock/Unlock Switch

3-Way Joystick Switch

Heavy Metal Base

13ft Cable with Internal Cable Storage

Connects to the Console via Lag-free USB

Integrated Xbox LIVE Headset Port

Hardware
The new fight stick pro is bigger then the previous entry level fight sticks. Weighing in at about 5 and a half pounds this fight stick more then looks the part, it feels the part too. It doesn’t feel to heavy yet very solid when on your lap or on a table. The design also has to get a nod as the art and overall look to it is great. The 3-Way joystick switch is a great feature to have. This allows you to switch from the left, right analogue stick or even the directional pad for use in other games. Side scrollers and other titles are examples of this. Madcatz are also one of the only companies to feature turbo controllers on their fight sticks. Valuable depending on it’s use but something good to have none the less.

The eight button layout with the start and select being at the back of the controller is the best decision for tournament play since pressing one of them can lead to automatic disqualification. This stick is USB wired which I prefer. I have a wireless stick myself and thought that the slight amount of precision made from this being wired is definitely better. The cord is long and also has a put away compartment when it is not in use. For those playing over Xbox Live will like the addition of the headset port which is standard nowadays. What’s also great is that it comes with an adapter incase you are using the generic headset. For anyone else using headsets or mixers will be able to plug and play directly into the stick.

Gameplay Use
We’ve found this fight stick to be one of the best we’ve ever used across the board. The joystick and button precision is top notch and the sticks weight should easily become the standard to start with. We’ve tested the game with Street Fighter X Tekken, Super Street Fighter IV Arcade Edition, Mortal Kombat and Tekken 6. Mortal Kombat especially felt nice since most moves require quick left or right movement instead of circular motions. The ability to lock in settings to a certain fighting game with the stick is also great as you won’t need to go through every controller menu to change them.

Our only main gripe has to do with the joystick itself. While our results bested other fight sticks it wasn’t as 1 to 1 with 3D fighters like Tekken. Other sticks tuned for that have a broader joystick directional gate then this but is hardly noticeable for casual player. The stick will also set you back $169 for those counting their dollars.

Overall this is the best arcade stick I’ve played with at this price point. Sturdy yet solid design, button mapping, turbo controls and a cord put away compartment easily make this a go to stick for those looking out there. The arcades never felt better in a living room then here. Must buy for those looking to up their game on the new wave of fighters. Check out our unboxing video below.

Pax East 2012

This weekend Remdog and myself were lucky to be able to get to go to Boston’s Pax East and engulf all the newest games that are out on the horizon. As usual we’ll be updating everyone throughout the next couple of weeks of what went down and all the wonderful games we played, seen, and were introduced to at Pax East. Just a few of the titles we got hands on with was Aliens Colonial Marines, Far Cry 3, Max Payne 3, Ghost Recon Future Soldier, and Borderlands 2.  We also got to see game play of XCOM, Assassins Creed 3, Hitman Absolution, and TONS of indie games,  so if anyone was wondering how the games played, features of some of the games, or just any questions in general leave a comment and we’ll answer them when we do the write up. If I didn’t mention any of the game titles that you’re interested in, post a comment of which game you do want news on and if it was at Pax East and we played/saw it, I’ll be sure to answer as much as I can.
