F.E.A.R. 3 coming to consoles and PC this fall

Warner Bros. has just announced that they will be bringing their heart-pounding paranormal horror first person shooter this fall 2010 to the Xbox 360, PS3 and PC.

Alma returns in F.E.A.R. 3 but this time her sons Point Man and Paxton Fettel introduce divergent co-op, giving players distinctly different abilities affecting their own play as well as the experience of their co-op partner. Gamers participate in single player or co-op modes as Point Man, a genetically enhanced super soldier originally introduced in F.E.A.R., or they can play cooperatively as his conniving brother Paxton Fettel, whose incredible telekinetic power has given him life beyond the grave. The game is developed by Day 1 Studios, developer of the original F.E.A.R. console games in collaboration with Monolith Studios. To further the extreme terror in F.E.A.R. 3, horror director John Carpenter (Halloween, Village of the Damned) and critically acclaimed horror comic and script writer Steve Niles (30 Days of Night) have provided consultation to enhance several of the game’s frightening aspects.

We’ll give you more on this game as it comes in.

Review: Major League Baseball 2K10

This year, the 2K franchise celebrated their 10 year anniversary of their Major League Baseball games. With cover athlete Evan Longoria, the “10” on the 2K10 logo is golden to commemorate the event. Unfortunately, that’s really the only “golden” thing about this year’s release.

As I’m about to describe, 2K10 isn’t a terrible game. In fact, the pitching engine, once you get used to it, does add a little more of a sense of realism to the game. It’s easier for you to make a mistake on a pitch by overthrowing, or not using the right “arm movement.” One big problem that I have with the pitching system is the speed of the pitches. Even a 95 mph fastball comes in way to slow and a 4-seam fastball has a break to it (it shouldn’t) This lack of realism makes it slightly difficult to establish a hitting rhythm. With that being said, the batting engine didn’t change much. It’s still pull back and flick forward for power or just flick forward for contact. A big problem I had with batting was trying to drag bunt. In order to execute a drag bunt, you would need to start the bunt while the pitcher still has the ball.

In the field, their is a whole new bag of problems. Their are many flaws in the fielding engine that makes the game more complicated than it needs to be. For example, the game gave me control of my right fielder and wanted me to run across to make a play from a fly ball that was hit to straight-away centerfield. Another issue I had with the fielding was occasionally, when I would move the fielders towards the target to catch a fly ball, the fielder seemed to run in the opposite direction.

Graphically, the game looks decent. The best looking thing in the game is the stadiums. Citi Field looks very good, however one problem that I had with the visuals was the crowd. In the front, the crowd looks fine, but a few rows back, and the crowd becomes that blur of human mass. The players themselves look pretty good, although the uniforms could use some tweaking. However, a BIG problem I have with the players, is the fact that some players still have the profile picture of them on their old team. I’m sorry, but there’s no excuse for having the old picture of a player who’s been on the new team for OVER A YEAR. Little things like that really put a damper on the full experience of the game.

2K10 dives into the single-player-career-mode this year with “My Player.” This feature allows the user to create a player and assign themselves into the Double A affiliate of any team. I would have liked the option to get “drafted” and randomly be assigned to a team but maybe next year. In My Player, your player’s attributes are acquired based on your performance in games, which I liked. Unfortunately, some stats are more easily acquired than others; you only gain speed attributes after you score. That doesn’t make too much sense to me but it’s their first year trying out this new feature so I can allow a few rookie mistakes.

The online play is pretty good. I don’t really enjoy online play for baseball games because if the connection isn’t perfect, and there is a hint of lag, the game becomes impossible. However the ability to play in online leagues really make the adventure worth taking.

All in all, Major League Baseball 2K10 is an improvement from last year’s release. This doesn’t say too much because last year’s title, in my opinion, was abysmal. I think 2K sports is on the right track with the baseball series. I feel they still have a ways to go before they catch The Show, but they’re on the right track.

Gunnar Digital Performance Eyeware Review

Weezer model

Stlyish, technological eyecare for advancing gaming technology.

There were plenty of gaming goodies all over the show floor at Pax East 2010. One gaming goodness that stood out to me were Gunnar’s Digital Performance Eyeware. These glasses are designed to ease the relentless stream of information that comes from computers, tvs, and handheld screens to your eyes. We were going to use them for gaming as that is one of their main focuses. I actual bought a pair (the Weezer model) because I was in dire need of lenses to help with my constant eyestrain from monitors and gaming. Were Gunnar eyeware really the new gaming glasses they say they are?

For starters, Gunnar claims that these glasses reduce “Digital Eye Fatigue” and “Computer Vision Syndrome, so let us review the features to familiarize ourselves to understand the full spectrum. In terms of comfortability, they feel very natural when put on. Our glasses were ultra-light stainless steel frames, so they are flexible and can be easily adjusted. They are not heavy and have a very snug fit. Wearing them will help you appreciate the vision you already have and aware of how sensitive they are by reducing the artificial light that comes in.

Gunner utilizes innovative i-AMP Lens Technology. The four technologies used for their glasses are diAMIX lens material, i-FL lens coating, FRACTYL lens geometry and iONik lens tints. Each pair provides its own unique aspect and overall experience. When in use, you will see a difference because they refocus your sight and give everything a magnified appearance. Believe it or not this helps, giving your eyes a break from having to keeping focusing, putting less stress on them.

The lenses have a yellow hue, and is used to help your eyes stay relaxed when viewing monitors at relatively short distance. What make monitors damaging to your eyes is that the artificial light is constanly going through your eyes. What the yellow hue does is when the light passes through, your eyes have a much easier time processing the light. After taking them off, I notice my eyes were dialaiting and watering to refocus which shows how much we go through to process this information.

What makes Gunnar’s glasses so great is how light they are. When I wore them it was easy to forget I had them on (aside of everything looking slightly yellow of course.), my ears don’t feel starined from the weight at all. This seemed perfect as I managed to play a number of games like Modern Warfare 2, Final Fantasy 13, etc. for an extented period of time without feel a hint of eyestrain.

The Gunnar glasses are a vital asset to my gaming experience. Prices range from $70 up to $150. The differences in price vary from style and the quality of the frames, the lense quality are pretty much the same. Any choice would be a wise investment. We all know that prolonged periods of viewing monitors can damage your eyes in the long term. With Gunnar’s glasses, you can rest assure that your eyes are well taken care of. Depending on the kind of gamer or computer user you are, this won’t appeal to everyone but once you try them you will definitely notice the difference.

>Side Note – The glasses can be prescriptioned filled at selected Gunnar retailers, they also have an outdoor edition and have clear lenses as well, to learn more about Gunnars’s products, go to gunnars.com

Bioshock 2 Sinclair Solutions Tester Pack review

Not to long after the release of Bioshock 2 we already have our first downloadable content for the game. It is in the form of a multiplayer pack and definitely benefits those who have already reached the max level of the game. This isn’t so much as DLC that would add more levels but more like a booster pack. What you get is an increase of your maximum level, new playable characters, new trials, a weapon upgrade and additional masks. Seems worth it right?

If your looking to take your character further or have ranked to the highest level of 40, you now get an increased level cap to 50 and receive bonuses to suit so. Those bonuses include the new trials that you can undergo while playing. For those who don’t know trials are much like the barrack challenges in Modern Warfare 2, completing certain in-game challenges to boost your level. This side of the pack leans toward season players but can suit new comers that want to get as much out of the game that they can get.

A third weapon upgrade is now available as well, giving you another option when customizing your load outs. This mostly will benefit those in higher ranks as more options at those levels become available. Two new playable characters are also at your disposal, Louie McGraff and Oscar Calraca. Both also have there own back story like the other characters that can be picked. Last but not least five additional masks are added as well but can only be unlocked once you reach level 41 and beyond.

We would have liked to see a little more bang in this one. More stages, another mode or something to suit lower level players. You don’t see much effect coming in at anything lower then 41, will this give you the nudge to increase past that? In some cases yes. All in all the pack definitely leads toward veteran players of the multiplayer but can make those who want to come back and stretch the gameplay a little bit further until the next dlc comes along.

Limbo Hands On Impressions

Out of all the games on the PAX East floor few games got the attention that Limbo got, and for good reason, just one look at Limbo and you know instantly that its not like any other game. Limbo is a 2D puzzle sidescroller set in a haunting world where everything seems like a shadow, making the title of the game very apprioriate. With limited visuals and no hints on how to solve the puzzles, Limbo gives players a true sense of loneliness as they explore the desolate world.
Players are given control of a nameless boy on an unknown mission, all that the player has to do is traverse through the stages safely, and here is the real challenge of Limbo. The game is full of traps like pits, and deep pools of water, on top of the traps there are also several enemies including giant spiders, and what seems to be older boys who are out to get the hero. The game gives you no weapons and with only the ability to jump and grab objects players definitely need be careful as they move through out the game.

Probably the most interesting thing about Limbo is how little is known about it, the developers have given no details on the story, who the boy is, what his goal is or even where he is. This aura of mystery around the story adds even more to the experience and is surely what the developer is trying to do. Limbo is scheduled to be released on XBLA but doesn’t have a release date yet.
