Hands on: Green Day Rock Band

Ever since the reactions Harmonix had received for The Beatles Rock Band game, they knew there was a hit on their hands. Green Day Rock Band is set to mimic that success with authentications that not only define the Green Day name but leap forward for the Rock Band franchise. I sat down with lead designer Chris Foster and publicist Stephanie Myers at the MTV headquarters for a hands on of the game.

The Green Day: Rock Band will feature 47 songs including a collection of greatest hits and fan favorites, two from Insomniac, three from Nimrod and two from Warning. Most importantly the band’s most iconic albums Dookie and American Idiot in its entirety, while the third album 21st Century Breakdown can be pared with the six songs that had already been dlc before that for the completion of the record. Green Day made sure they gave fans what they wanted and tried to make the experience as true to Green Day as possible. It was important to include the entire albums of Dookie and American Idiot for that reason. Unlike the Rock Band games before this, Green Day Rock Band features full band motion capturing for all the songs, giving each one a different feel to them.

Like the Beatles Rock Band game all the songs are unlocked from the start. The challenge or maybe longevity of the game may take a hit with some season veterans of Rock Band but no one can deny this pick up and play system works. The game is actually harder then many songs in Rock Band, as some of Green Days songs can get particularly faster, especially on drums. The campaign progression and challenges will have great archival material that can be unlocked, like the Beatles Rock Band game did. Over 100 photos, and 40 minutes of video of all kinds of stuff ranging from interviews, out takes, song performances and unreleased footage. Chris Foster explained how working with MTV obviously gave them the advantage to explore a lot of rare material.

The game focuses on three venues that Green Day has played throughout their career. What I loved was the detail of each venue and the band at that particular moment. I got a chance to play a song from each venue, not only did it give a sense of being there but the style and age was captured for that time period as well. The game looks better then any Rock Band Game before it and with the motion capturing, it moved better as well.

GD: RB is shaping up nicely and is set for release in only two months. Their is no doubt that there are plenty of rhythm based games but its rare to see attention to detail like this. We’re looking forward to the various changes made in this game, along with personally learning more from Green Days catlog. Harmonix’s goal seems to be quality vs quantity and we couldn’t agree more from the results.

Product: Caps4Stix review – analog stick covers

If you own an Xbox 360, PS3 or Wii its no surprise that with normal use of the controller, the rubber on the thumb sticks start to wear off. Those crisp little buds on the surface of the Xbox 360 controller, ridges of the PS3 and Wii controller will be no worn in only a couple of months. Caps4Stix rejuvenates your thumb sticks with their analog stick covers.

Caps4Stix are soft rubber thumb grips for your analog controllers and due to the soft grippy buds on the ends of the rubber, it will completely eliminate
the problem of your thumbs slipping off the stick during game play. We tested it for several different controls and consoles, our first was the Xbox 360. A snug fit and ideal use for the Xbox 360. It feels much better then the original analog grips, example when playing Modern Warfare 2 it added a little more precision with movements. On the PS3 since the analog sticks come up the buds on the covers pop out. It took us a second to get used to this feeling but again felt better then the original analog sticks.

These covers feel very natural and should have little to no slipping issues. They also work for various different controls on different consoles as well, the nunchuk for the Wii works great as well, however older controller thumb sticks may get stuck around the edges when fully rotating. That is because they evidently make the analog sticks bigger since this is a cover for the existing ones.

Overall these are a must for anyone that want as much precision as possible during gameplay. Whether you have an old or new controller they are definitely better then the factory made analog sticks. They will last longer and even when you get to the point where it will be worn out they are better then the original rubber. For about $1.99 you can’t go wrong with this product.

Pros: Feels great, Better feedback and easy to mount.

Con: Could use more colors

Review: Mass Effect 2 – Kasumi’s Stolen Memory DLC

Mass Effect 2 has released a brand new DLC called Kasumi’s Stolen Memory. Shepard has been requested to assist a new crew mate. Kasumi Goto, a mysterious hooded thief who needs help with a dangerous heist. With Kasumi’s set of stealthy skills to assist Shepard in the mission and the new items that it supply’s, is the DLC worth its purchase?

Shepard meets Kasumi on the Citadel through an ad screen as she gives little info about her background. She then becomes part of Shepard’s crew. As you make your way to her loyalty mission, she informs Shepard about her plan and the way it is going to play out. This mission is different from most other missions in ME2. The only crewmate that goes with Shepard is Kasumi. Shepard (in a new formal suit) has to mingle with a few high class crooks, while trying to infiltrate the vault of a smuggler/weapons dealer.

Kasumi’s Stolen Memory brought a lot of different scenery to ME2. Shepard goes from a lavish home, to a huge vault, to underground storage tunnels, and an elevated docking pad. Kasumi is a very interesting crewmate whos story comes from a different angle. Beneath the shadowy hood there is one power that Kasumi has that is pretty flashy, the Shadow Strike. With this ability Kasumi goes invisible then re-appears behind the enemy , then strikes down the foe. This DLC is priced at 560 MS points or $7 and was worth the adventure. One thing about this add-on is that it makes more sense for you to NOT have beaten the game already because you would not be able to fully use Kasumi further on. Overall receiving a new and better SMG, new crew member for the rest of your missions (if you didnt beat the game), and don’t forget the new formal suit make it a buy. Be sure to pick this up to add to your Mass Effect 2 adventure.

Overall = 8.0
