Killzone 3 Announced… Officially

In a press release today Sony has announced Killzone 3. For some reason everyone seems to like the idea of jet packs in games, I think Capcom might have started the trend with Dark Void, but maybe just a few months too early. The third installment picks up from Killzone 2, their will be a lot of new guns, new vehicles, and everything will scream out at you in 3D. Also maps will be atleast ten times larger than they were in Killzone 2, so just imagine how immense this game will be! Don’t believe me? Well feel free to read the press release your self.

“London, May 24th 2010: Sony Computer Entertainment Europe has confirmed the return of its iconic first person shooter, Killzone®, to PlayStation®3 [PS3â„¢]. Bringing back the trademark ferocious action on a grand scale, Killzone®3 is an explosive cinematic experience more intense than ever before. Loaded with more vehicles, explosive high powered weapons and a vicious close-combat system, resume the fight against a remorseless Helghast Army of colossal proportions. This is David vs. Goliath…if Goliath had thousands of troops and a thermonuclear arsenal.

The story begins where Killzone®2 left off, with Visari, the vicious Helghast dictator, lying dead at the feet of Special Forces soldiers Sev and Rico. The battle may have been won but the war is far from over. Visari’s death has left behind a world of political scheming, infighting and outright murder. Meanwhile his parting gift, a nuclear bomb detonated in Phyruss, the Helghan Capital, has decimated the ISA invasion force. With no re-enforcements and supplies quickly running out, you must now fight against ruthless Helghast war machine alone.

An epic cinematic war experience

With levels ten times bigger than in Killzone 2, this is Helghan like you’ve never seen it before. You’ll face brutal combat in a host of environments that threaten to bury you on the deadly planet. Killzone 3 will see you trudge through toxic nuclear wastelands, get lost in a lethal alien jungle, fight in bitter arctic conditions and take the battle into space as you fight against Helghast domination – with every location featuring a distinct gameplay style for you to master.

Be at the centre of the action

Killzone 3 will be fully playable in Stereoscopic 3D, immersing you more deeply into the ferocious world and putting you at the heart of the action. But be careful. While you experience this world in incredible, High Definition, Stereoscopic 3D detail – you’ll learn to fear what’s around every single corner.

Take on an even more vicious Helghast army

The Helghast are back and they’re bigger and fiercer than you’ve ever seen them. From Jetpack troopers to enemies wielding portable weapons of mass destruction, your enemies will be tougher, scarier and equipped with a host of new toys in their quest for destruction.

Prepare for battle! Find out more at www.killzone.com.”

Update on Marvel vs Capcom 3

As some of you readers may already know, not too long ago Capcom released some new “teaser” information on its potential next big hit Marvel vs Capcom 3. The boys down at Capcom headquarters have decided to grace the public with more information regarding the new and highly anticipated character roster. Characters Dante (Devil May Cry), Felicia (Darkstalkers), Deadpool, and Captain America were among some of the confirmed combatants. Capcom also announced one if its newest features to the series, the “Exchange” button.  This button controls a variety of functions including:

  • Simplified launch attacks, which set your opponent up for many of the game’s beautifully rendered air combos.
  • Spike attacks, which deliver fierce downward attacks that enabled you to execute devastating ground combos.
  • Character switching, when pressed in midair, the exchange button allows you to switch between characters on the fly and/or during mid combos.
  • And lastly, Countering. From our interpretations, countering with the Exchange button works like a clash of attacks depending on correct guesses by the opponent in which direction the attack might be coming from.

Other news includes details on some of Deadpool’s special attacks (which included his signature teleportation device which malfunctions if used too often), some of the arsenal supplied to Chris Redfield, and the game’s art direction (which is highly identical to the art direction used in Tatsunoko vs Capcom for the Wii).

With E3 coming up right around the corner, many of us dedicated “MvC” fans will be waiting on the edges of our seats in anticipation for even more news about Marvel vs Capcom 3, a game that’s been 10 years in the making.

Rocket Knight Review

Rocket Knight is definitely one game that brings back memories. Konami dug down deep from their past and chose a great game to return for gamers through Xbox Live Arcade and PSN. Retro gaming is definitely not unheard of, I mean some of the best games have been those from the past. Look at Super Mario Bro. 3, Zelda, Tetris and Megaman even. This is the third game in the Rocket Knight series. The first being Rocket Knight Adventures for the Sega Genesis, the second is Sparkster: Rocket Knight Adventures 2 for the Genesis Mega Drive, and now Rocket Knight has made its way for the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3.

The game takes place fifteen years after the second game and play as Sparkster, once a valiant rocket knight that served the Zephyrus (opossum inhabited) Kingdom. Having defeated Devilgus the pig emperor of Devotindos and saving Zephyrus and it’s people, Sparkster pledged that he would forever protect the Zephyrus Kingdom from harm. While enjoying his fifteen years of peace and quiet with his family he notices that in the distance their are warships descending on Zephyrus. Once again Sparkster must bear arms and strap on his rocket pack to bring peace back to Zephyrus.

Rocket Knight is classified as a 2.5D side scrolling adventure. Easy controls, great visuals, and great music makes this game very enjoyable. Honestly it felt great to sit back  and relax with this game. Game play isn’t too difficult but challenging enough to make you keep your eyes on screen at all times. The revamp of the graphics, and the bright popping cartoonish colors do a great job of remembering the previous editions. Although the visuals are great, the game does suffer from some hiccups, such as too many characters and/or sprites on screen tends to slow down the frame rate a bit.

Rocket Knight has three game modes, Arcade, Free Play, and Gold Sparkster mode. Arcade mode gives you a normal (which is fairly easy), and hard modes, with three continues just in case you got a little caught up with something else off screen. Free Play mode lets you enjoy any stage of the game as long as you have completed it first. Gold Sparkster mode is basically hardcore mode. Players are given only four hearts rather than the eight in the normal and hard mode, and the refresh rate of your rockets are twice as fast. Each level can be played as a time trial or a level for highest points earned. There are plenty of blue gems, red gems, two different types of hearts, and an extra life hidden throughout most of the levels to get you what you need.

Aside from that the replay value seems to be a bit stale. This game is very much like shampoo, lather, rinse, repeat.  Point of almost all the levels is get to the other side, it doesn’t even matter if you even collect everything just as long as you finish. Unless you’re fighting for a top spot on a leaderboards, replay one specific level again, or in the mood to play a classic retro side scrolling adventure game once completed, then that’s pretty much all you’re going to get afterward.

All in all I must admit that this game was fun to play, it brought back a lot of memories. Old school 2D side scrollers, beat’em ups, and horizontal or vertical shooters have a feeling of just retro gaming. Rocket Knight encompasses all of that and has made it look good. We would have liked the inclusion of some type of multiplayer, the game length is fairly short, and the game is a bit pricier then we liked for something with a short span. The PS3 has priced the game at $14.99, and Xbox 360 has priced it for 1200 MS points. No one that remembers the original will want to pass this up, Konami has done a good job in making a fresh sequel experience of a classic instead of a rehash.

Gaming in Afghanistan

0

Everyday I wonder if we as gamers appreciate everything that we have developed into, and how far gaming has come. It’s amazing that arcades exist and are being occupied in Afghanistan, they may not be jammed full of kids at a time but people attend them to get away from the harsh reality that they live in. Just seeing some of the photographs that were taken in one of the arcades left me speechless.

I’ve always been a kid at heart and I believe that I always will be. Hopefully these children that are in warn torn countries, and countries that are not as fortunate can enjoy their childhoods. If any of you readers are willing to contribute to help aid children of war I’ve added some links that may help the cause.

Modern Warfare: Black Ops Uncut Trailer

“Lies, lies lies, I’m so tired of lies!” The UNCUT trailer for Call of Duty Modern Warfare: Black Ops is up, and from the looks of it, the game does in deed partly take place in Vietnam. Later on in the trailer their are scenes from an arctic location, and of a SR-71 Blackbird jet flying in the outer atmosphere.  A breach system is in place for the first person story mode. Some new weapons that seem to be available will be a crossbow with explosive tips (Finally my Rambo dreams can come true!!), and a new type or manually targeted rocket launcher. What more is their to say?  Watch, comment, enjoy!
