Denon AVR-X4300H Receiver Review: Versatility King

Denon has been in the game for audio equipment for ages now. Only a few names come to mind when talking about well rounded and affordable receivers and this is no exception except we believe it has a few more bells and whistles then the normal receiver you would get.
de_avrx4300h_e3_bk_ar_hi2-sm on the inside. Two dials are in front, left being the source selector, the right is your master volume with the display in the center. Nothing too out of the ordinary but it is however one of the better looking receivers giving you a sleek minimalist display. This is achieved by the hidden flap that hides basic controls, an HDMI port, USB port, audio mic jack and a composite input which are all nice editions to have.

On the back it has a ton of connections and options to take advantage of. The channel connections are easily laid out across the receiver on one line versus others that mostly occupy more then one line of space for the speaker inputs. Their are seven HDMI inputs in the back and three outputs as well which is a plenty to take advantage of and all support 4k 60hz with HDR (High Dynamic Range). Other inputs include stereo analogue inputs, two optical, two coaxial audio inputs, four composite video inputs and two outputs. It also integrated Wifi, ethernet port bluetooth and an AM and FM tuners. It’s actually a very impressive box with things we didn’t even realize to utilize until now.
denon-x4300h-review-3344574
Configuration
Overall it allows a 9.2 speaker with 200w that can be delivered to each channel and lets you do a few configurations with it. One is a 7.1 channel with two speakers above which would be a 7.1.2 or you can create a 5.1 with four speakers above which is a 5.1.4 setup which was our setup. Their are two more speaker channels which can be setup with an external amp giving you a 11.2 option.

Software
Initial setup was easy and used the Audyssey MultEQ XT32 for calibration so the room and speakers can be fully optimized. It does a good job of setting up LFC (Low Frequency Containment) across channels and what set of hz each speaker set should be at. Options for optimizing sound and video are also present which we tweaked to our liking for a better listening experience. It has various settings ranging from THX, to dynamic audio and has every known available codecs to date. The big ones are Dolby Atmos, DTS:X and Auro 3-D. These are the codecs needed to fully utilize the height speakers to their full potential. Although it needs to be purchased Auro 3-D is not widely available on units as on the consumer side they are still making breakthroughs so this makes the box even more future proof. You can check out our review for Auro 3-D with this Denon AVR-X4300H receiver here or the video above. Each of these codecs to a great job on the receiver with their algorithms when the source is not native to it.
denon-x4300h-review-32
The only two things we felt we had issues with was on boot up depending on the connection it would start you at a screen where it would just say Denon until all things were active (the tv, the source of video/sound and receiver) and would do it every time. We were able to customize this with a bit of tinkering. The other thing is the lip sync feature which does a good job with trying to lineup both audio and video but we found that an extra video processing on the sources part made the audio delay and the issue is that it doesn’t look like you can delay audio into the negatives. Some other receivers allow it to almost bring the audio in first but none the less we’ve only had this issue when playing with features on an Xbox One S like the new bitstream for Dolby Atmos which we don’t know if their will be a fix or not too.

Performance
We put the receiver through its paces and gotta say it performs very well across the board. With our 5.2.4 setup we had Klipch Gallery series speakers, a Klipsch subwoofer and a SVS 1000watt subwoofer as our heavy hitters in the system and it powered everything with ease. It’s able to drive a decent size room perfectly without distortion at high volumes. Of course higher end receivers can perform better but unless you’re creating a movie theater room of extensive proportions you might not even be able to tell the difference. We tested three things entertainment, music and games.

Entertainment like Netflix sounded good especially with the up-mixing algorithms that Dolby, DTS and Auro 3D have. Nothing sounded like it came in low quality at all. Blu-rays on the other hand is where things take full advantage as Dolby HD and DTS HD are crisp and clear with every note. Dolby Atmos and DTS:X in particular are pretty breath taking when setup correctly. We’ve heard the immersive sound from other receivers but on the X4300H it really pops signifying sound separated by channel and area and does become a mess of noise.

Music whether it’s streaming from a device, directly from an HDMI source or High Fidelity sound great. We particularly had an event where the party was driven by the system making the experience grand and impressive scale across the event. If you take advantage of Auro 3-D this is where you want to have your system set to with live music as it’s nothing like we’ve heard before form a codecs.

Gaming worked very well with the unit. Playing Battlefield 1, Forza Horizon 3 or Injustice 2 on Xbox One S and Playstation 4 pro is handled by the system great. No distortion or weird hiccups to be found here. The up-mixing is works well and you may want to try and experiment with the different codecs too your liking.
denon-x4300h-review-323234
Bottomline
This has to be one of the best receivers we’ve seen in recent years. It’s packed with features and performance to boot. It really has everything you would get from higher end receivers at a reasonable price for what you’re getting. Auro 3-D in the unit almost makes it worth it as a future proof device as AVR units triple its price don’t have it or the amount of inputs in brings. This can not only be upgradable with an external amp making it an 11.2 channel but it also has their HEOS speaker system integrated for a multiroom setup.

An indepth Look and analysis at Starwars Battlefront 2

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, Starwars Battlefront 2 was announced and there was actually live multiplayer game play during the announcement at E3 but here’s a deeper look into what EA and DICE have to bring to the table and will break down some of the game play to tell you what they’ve added to the fray. Before we jump into the nitty gritty here’s a quick trailer to wet your appetite.

First off let’s talk about the class system. Compared to the previous Battlefront game, this one has multiple classes just like Battle Field has. It’s a good switch from the previous game since it adds a little more customization to how people play. Each side will have an Assault, Heavy, Officer, and Specialist class. Each class will have three different types of abilities, two of which are specific to each class. Their abilities are broken down into cards with four different levels of progression earned through play. The Assault will focus on short to medium engagements with different types of weapons and abilities such as a rapid shot blaster, or a medium ranged assault blaster. Abilities wise, the first slot gives a thermal detonator a type of high explosive grenade. The second ability is called a vanguard, which gives the assault class a small speed boost and equips a shotgun type blaster with no overheating penalty which of course can be either used for offensive pushes, or a way to run away and escape to regroup. The Heavy gets a heavier repeating blaster with the combat shield ability that covers the top portion of the character, the secondary ability is called Sentry, which gives the Heavy a gatling type blaster which has massive damage. The Officer class plays a support role that can definitely change the tide of battle. Armed with a hand blaster the Officer has the ability to deploy sentry guns and give his unit something called Battle Command Fortitude which boosts health of his squad. Lastly is the Specialist class, or the sniper class. Specialists are armed with a scoped blaster rifle for long ranged combat while their abilities include a trip mine for those flanking Assault classes, and the Infiltration ability which allows the Specialist to ping their enemies in a area while scrambling other enemy scanners. While Infiltration is active the Specialist’s pistol blaster gains a no overheat ability for those rapid close range kills. As far as classes go each side will also be able to purchase specialized characters or vehicles to use during combat. Players will accrue battle points by killing the enemy team, completing objectives, or assisting teammates during combat. Earn enough credits and you’ll be able to unlock a Hero character such as Han Solo, Darth Maul, Rey, or Boba Fett.

swbf2class

For the vehicles in the game, they’ve adjusted the cockpit viewing mode where it’s actually feasible to use it now, where previously it was a bit awkward to target in dog fights. Depending on which side you’re assigned to, clone troopers will be using the N-1 Starfighter, V-Wing, or AT-RT (a small version of a AT-AT that is half opened and fits one). As for the droid army, you’ll get to ride in a vulture droid, the troop transport, and the armored assault tank or better known as the AAT. Besides vehicles and heroes, each side will also get a specialized fighter. For the clone army, you’ll be able to play the clone jumptrooper, a jump pack wearing, rocket shooting bad ass. For the droid army you get the R2 super battle droid, a steroid version of the regular droid with a rocket mounted arm cannon.

Starwars Battlefront 2 apparently will now have a story mode, something the first game was lacking. Apparently in the story mode the main character will be Iden Versio an imperial special forces operative who is out to avenge Emperor Palpatine. As you have noticed, the heroes that are playable, Boba Fett, Darth Maul, and Rey don’t exactly all come from the same era so it leads us to believe the new game will cover multiple timelines. What or how everyone will come together is still a mystery but it’s something I’m looking forward to. Since the game is still in Alpha I’m sure there’ll be more room to expand on what there is to the Battlefront universe. Along with other hero characters like Yoda, Kylo Ren, Luke Skywalker, who make a brief appearance in one of the trailer, who else knows who’s gonna make an appearance? One thing we are sure of though is when more information comes out for Battlefront 2 you can be sure that we’ll be covering it. Expect early access for pre-order of the Elite Trooper Deluxe Edition and Origin access on November 14th, and the worldwide release on November 17th.

Samsung Q8C QLED TV Review: Lots of Power Under This Hood

1

While OLED has been out for a few years now it is still one of the most expensive pieces of technology for television. It was only a matter of time before something new would try and rival it and Samsung looks to have the answer for OLED. They’ve come out with a line of QLED (Quantum Dot) TV’s that bring out the best of what an OLED TV but in a familiar shell.

qled-q8c-61573510-review-2
Design
This TV is one of the best designed TV’s out there. The Q8C has a curved bezel-less screen and a chrome trim that’s only about 5mm wide and a all-metal chrome stand with a curve shape. The Samsung logo lights up when you turn it on but can be toggled and the overall TV is thin. This is thanks the One Connect box that is the brains of the operation which connects from the TV from an thin fiber optic cable. The remote is pretty minimalist as well giving you only a few buttons to navigate but gets the job done just fine and can even accept voice commands. Design-wise this TV is definitely is a head turner.
qled-q8c-61573510-review-5-one-connect
Hardware
The Q8C uses a 10-bit panel that’s 4K with edge LED lighting and has new quantum dot technology over that as a new layer. This layer preserves the pure color and increases the brightness of the entire display. This also means that over 1,500 nits of peak brightness can be achieved by the TV itself. With that being said they’ve opted out of the traditional chip system and inputs directly on the TV and have instead went with a Smart Hub call the One Connect. This actually acts more like a mini receiver then just a hub for the TV as it has multiple HDMI connections, internet, optical port, antenna and three USB ports. Only issue we had here like the TV itself it doesn’t have any real physical buttons to turn on the TV and navigate which means the remote is everything so you can’t lose or misplace the thing.

qled-q8c-61573510-review-4-recore
Software
The One Connect has a launch bar at boot up which lists your apps and various smart device features. It runs on a Tizen platform which performs very smooth. The TV supports HDR10+ (The plus is a slightly more customized version of High Dynamic Range 10) and HLG which make the picture color range great A great feature is how new devices are added, connecting a game unit like an Xbox One or PS4 gets an automatic prompt and add to the overall hub like an app newly installed. Other devices can be added manually as well which is a simply process. The menus are fairly easy to navigate giving you plenty of options for sound, picture and other settings. I also particularly liked the fact that Gamefly’s streaming service is also a feature in the box as well. You can grab a blu-tooth controller and play games if you have a subscription to the service.

The only real hiccup we’ve run into is the screen locking up for as long as 30seconds when you boot it up with a specific program already launched like Netflix. Another which is not really an issue per say as you have to make sure that if you want to receive a 4K signal that you go into the menu settings and under the specific HDMI port you are using that you select it. It doesn’t do it automatically but I hope in the future it does.
qled-q8c-61573510-review-3
Picture Quality
The TV has a ton of settings that could be taken advantage of once you get it up and running. Out of the box the picture quality is good. Set on dynamic with flesh tones on the warmer side. Calibrating the TV opens you up to achieve great brightness levels, local dimming on and off and a better contrast ratio which we took full advantage of. Black levels were also great on this and of course with a darker room performed even better. Depending on your local dimming setting makes a difference in contrast and black levels.

Our 4K test for streaming worked well. Netflix’s 4K offering and HDR is some of the best you can stream anywhere. Masters of None Season 2’s colors really pop and facial detail looked very good as well. Batman V Superman in 4K UHD Blu-ray also looked exceptionally well. The range of color in that movie is one of the best we’ve seen for HDR. Last but not least for gaming we tried a few games for Playstation 4 Pro on scaling 4K and Injustice 2 and Forza Horizon 3 with HDR. Gaming was the cream of the crop, color accuracy across the board was like nothing I’ve seen before, the level of detail was outstanding and the low latency is how gaming should be done!

Sound
The sound for this specific TV was pretty good for how thin it is. It has a 60W of amplification built into a 4.2-channel and is evened out on the display. It can get pretty loud without getting muddy so their’s no need to worry about the actual sound quality here.

Bottomline
The Q8C is one of the best TV’s we’ve seen to release. OLED is superior in some functionalities but has a high price tag. The price tag for these at the moment are a bit high and it is an LCD at its core but this is a great TV with an amazing display and shows much promise for the future of Samsung in this space. This is the perfect TV to watch movies, live events and play games on as 4K along with 1080p both look great on this!

Ubisoft E3 2017 Showed promise but plays it safe

With Ubisoft’s showcase happening not that long ago, we’ve all had a chance to digest everything that was thrown at us and running through the list they looked to have done better then previous years. For the people who may have missed the showcase, we’re going to be covering everything that we’ve seen, what seemed to be good, what they should be doing more on, and everything else that the showcase was jam-packed full of.

First on deck was the much awaited game, Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle, a game that is dropping August 29th exclusively for the Nintendo Switch. Apparently this game has many people on the fence about what it’s going to be like, myself included. Not sure how the mix of the two universes were going to mix together with one another, but after seeing what they had to show us, we can say that it seems like something that is going to be interesting, and something to be on the look out for. They went with a turn based tactical adventure game like XCom, instead of the normal  Mario platformer that everyone is used to. You will be mixing and matching characters to form what they’re calling a Dream team, to save the Mushroom Kingdom with a mix of new powers, and new characters. There is also now what they are calling Battle Zones. In these flagged zones you work together as a team to take out whomever is in the zone, or you complete the task that is given, some which may just be getting to the other side of the zone. One of the only downfalls that we are seeing is that there may not be multiplayer in the game, but something they may add later on.

ACOrigin

The announcement of the new Assassin’s Creed game was something that many were waiting for, but to many others…not so much. Some people saying that the franchise is over done, and giving up hope that this new game wouldn’t be worth it in the long run. With that being said, they did show off an amazing trailer, along with thirty minutes of actual game play footage. Assassin’s Creed: Origins will embrace action RPG elements, sprawling open world maps, and more free-form action. This time taking us to the beginning as they say, before the Brotherhood, before Altaïr Ibn-La’Ahad before what many even knew what an assassin was. This time around you play as Bayek the last Medjay, along with his modern counterpart who is already a trained assassin. Many are saying that he interacts with Rebecca, Shaun and William. His mission, will apparently be handed over by William something that we have not seen in the past few games. There have been reports as well, stating that it takes elements from both Unity and Syndicate, along with combat and stealth being fixed this time round. Something that may be on the downside of a game like this would be the fans that have already given up on the franchise or the ones that say that the game is getting too “Cookie Cutter”. Be on the look out for this game dropping October 27th of this year.

Crew2

There were a few games that were shown that were already in early access. The Crew 2 the sequel that has been said to turn the racing genre on its head. This time around you are able to not only street race but you are able to go off-road, and conquer the sea, and air as well to become the biggest name in all of racing. Another that game in beta is a new pirate game that is coming out in the fall, called Skull and Bones, where you embrace the pirate life, and sail the high seas when Piracy was at its peak. In this tactical combat game, where you take over trade routes and collect the one thing that pirates cared about the most… Booty! You’re even able to have a five on five PVP matches and see which crew has bigger cannon balls. Skulls and Bones also offers solo story lines, or co-op, where you’ll can help your friends build the best fleet out there. So be on the look out for these games in 2018.

Skulls n bones

South Park, everyone’s favorite show, has two games that were shown. One of them being the much talked about The Fractured But Whole, and the other a mobile game known as Phone Destroyer. we should start with the first of the two. The Fractured But Whole asks the question to the players what are you? Are you an alien, a high-tech wonder, or a genetically altered mutant? You also get to create your own one-of-a-kind costume, craft your origin story, and build out your unique superpowers. Find that cool? Not only that, you get to explore many new places in South Park, but remember that at night, a whole new world opens up, where your alter ego harnesses their powers to do whatever it takes to save the town. Phone Destroyer on the other hand is a free to play real time strategy card game which reminded me of the very first game Stick of Truth. Expect to see trademarked South Park humor and collectible cards in a perfect mix.

FBTW

We also go a look at Steep, Starlink: Battle for Atlas, and Just Dance 2018 Just Dance 2018 will be coming into the mix with players being able to dance to 40 of the hottest tracks of the year including “24K Magic” by Bruno Mars, “Side to Side” by Ariana Grande ft. Nicki Minaj, “Chantaje” by Shakira Ft. Maluma, among other songs as well. This game along with last years are both able to be played on the Nintendo Switch as well as all the other systems. Steep the game where you become the king of the mountain, with full customization along with being able to pick what kind of ride you have, is coming out with the first expansion. Ubisoft didn’t say too much about the expansion, save for the fact that it will have to deal with the Winter Olympics, and what athletes will need to do in order to compete and train for the events. Finally Starlink: Battle for Atlas, a game that brings toys-to-life. Players will create a team of starfighter pilots and directly control them in battle against an enemy known as the Forgotten Legion. Not much is said about the plot of the game, but from what I’ve seen it reminded of No Man’s Sky.

starlink

Ubisoft also announced they were working on a VR title that was being called Transference. The company is explaining the title as a psychological thriller. Where you meet a troubled family and solve their riddle through a multi-branching narrative, by experiencing the limits of techno-psychology and escaping a maze-like puzzle concealing a corrupted truth. The trailer for the game did peak interest with many people are we are looking forward to finding out more about the game as Spring of 2018 comes closer.

The big announcements from Ubisoft other than Mario + Rabbids, was the next installment of Far Cry 5 and Beyond Good and Evil 2. This time around for Far Cry 5, is set in Hope County, Montana. Ubisoft themselves have said that this time around Hope County is also home to a fanatical doomsday cult known as The Project at Eden’s Gate that is threatening the community’s freedom. Stand up to the cult’s leader, Joseph Seed and the Heralds, and spark the fires of resistance that will liberate the besieged community. In this expansive world, your limits and creativity will be tested against the biggest and most ruthless baddest enemy Far Cry has ever seen. The game will also have co-op where you can hire your friends to help you go after the doomsday cult. Beyond Good and Evil 2, is one game that so many fans have been waiting for. A game that has been in the works for almost 15 years. It was said that this game is going to take place before the birth of Jade, the first game’s main character, and that it deals with finding your place in the stars. The first Good and Evil game was a semi-linear stealth/action game set in a Sci-Fi future populated by humans and sentient animal chimera’s called Hybrid. The game focused on a young photojournalist name Jade and her ragtag band of allies trying to save their planet from a deadly conspiracy. That said, this sequel-that’s-actually-a-prequel isn’t focused on Jade or her friends – it tells a new story in the same world, though it’s a very different version than in the original. This chapter focuses on a time when System 3, is newly colonized by humans and their still-enslaved genetically engineered Hybrids. The Hybrids we’ll meet at this point in history will be either slaves, liberated, or on the run. They also announced the start of The Space Monkey program, that you would be able to sign up for. From what everyone is understanding, it is a way that you are able to give feedback to the developers about changes or things in the game, almost as if you were a test player for the game, a game that they want to be perfect for the players that have stuck with them for so long.

FC5

Overall, if you don’t like or love Ubisoft as a developer, the showcase this year was not bad at all, there is many things to look forward to. Along with many things that still have not been told to us fully but something that is interesting to keep an eye on to see what happens.

Sony’s E3 Press Conference left us wanting more in a bad way

When Sony went on stage they made it clear they wanted to focus on the games, all of this was true to an extent. With this and other factors Sony failed to give us a real press conference, something for us to all be excited for and cheer at the top of our lungs that we’re happy to have a Playstation 4. Check out our reaction video above for our entire thoughts on it.

Did Bethesdaland E3 live up to the hype?

3

Before we get our ticket into Bethesdaland we must sit through the wait, or more like the games that they launched last year leading up to E3. Games such as Doom, Dishonored 2, or Prey were games that people really enjoyed right? Pete Hines reinforced this during the intro of the showcase by talking about how many people have been playing countless hours of Doom and Fallout Shelter, a game that got Bethesda over 100 million players. But that is not the end of the wait to get the tickets. They of course had to mention The two biggest titles that Bethesda has under its belt. Two games that will always bring everyone back over and over again… You guessed it, Fallout 4 and Skyrim because lets face it, everyone is still playing them, especially since everyone has added user created mods for both of the games. Both games have had over 300 Million mod downloads, since the release of the games last year.

Now that we have gotten our tickets, into the park…The Virtual Reality Department has been working hard on a couple of different experiences that players have always loved. The first is DOOM VFR. Truly a first person shooter since you are now able to dawn the virtual reality goggles. What they are showed us looks stunning, and yes something that many of the hard core DOOM players are going to be looking forward to get their hands on, but still nothing really to write home to mom about. The second game is Fallout 4 VR. some of the cool things that we were shown with that trailer was the fact that, in VR you’re able to really get the depth of the world of Fallout and become more immersed into the world that fans have come to love over the years.

Elder Scrolls Online is getting a nice addition to their MMO. Players are now able to return to a land that they’ve loved for years… Morrowind. Elder Scrolls Online: Morrowind is available now, so hurry up and start playing to bring back some major nostalgia. Along with that, Bethesda also announced that on June 29th Elder Scroll fans will be getting The Elder Scroll Legends: Heroes of Skyrim, a free to play strategy card game. Players will collect and build different class decks that to battle other players in the Chaos Arena based in the world that everyone has come to love. Elder Scroll Legends: Heroes of Skyrim will have a multi-platform release, everything from Bethesda.net, Steam, Android and Apple OS, so be sure to keep your eyes out for it next month on which ever device you prefer to play on. We also can not forget Nintendo’s version of Skyrim. During the demo a Link Amiibo was scanned in and dropped a chest from the Legend of Zelda into the Skyrim universe giving the Dragon Born a Link costume and weapons. Skyrim is truely getting a touch of Breath of the Wild.

Bethesda also introduced something called Creation Club which they described as “A collection of all-new content for both Fallout 4 and Skyrim. It features new items, abilities, and gameplay enhancements created by Bethesda Games Studio and outside development partners including the best community creators. Creation Club content is fully curated and compatible with the main game and official add-ons.” many people are calling this the companies idea or alternative to paid mods for Fallout 4 and Skyrim, they have also said that it is starting sometime this summer for Xbox One, PS4, and PC.

Now that we are almost halfway through This tour of Bethesdaland, we finally get to see something new, the trailer for Dishonored: The Death of the Outsider DLC. The trailer looked stunning, and many people are going to be super hyped for this game, knowing that Daud is still alive. One of the main components of the this game, along with his Second in command Billie Lurk who from what seems to be a fan favorite, will be to play as once again. It has been said that the pair will be trying to take down “The black eyed bastard responsible for all the chaos”. Expect that there will be all new enemies and many more different ways to kill them, from what we have seen. Be on the look out for this September 15th.

Another New game that they showed us is the trailer of The Evil Within 2, another game that everyone seems to be totally hyped about. The trailer is totally bonkers…very heavy on the voice over but not light on the jump scares and the dead bodies. We can only hope that a game like this will give us the answers that we all were seeking at the end, and we can expect the game to drop October 13th, just in time for to scare the hell out of us for Halloween.

The next stop is into the world of Esports, with the announcement of Quake Champions which is currently in Beta. Players in the Beta will luckily get some practice in for the Quake Championships on August 26th at Quakecon in Dallas which the grand prize is 1 million Dollars for the top team. The trailer also introduces B.J. Blazkowicz some who you might not know is the main character in Wolfenstein and for good reason because of the final stop in Bethesdaland

Our final stop in Bethesdaland is the trailer for Wolfenstein 2, a sequel that will will answer so many questions that the fans had after the end of the first game. “Your assassination of Nazi General Deathshead was a short-lived victory,” so says the description of the game currently. We’re sure that as the launch comes closer more information will be released but for now we know now that you’re playing as BJ Blazkowicz again, aka “Terror-Billy,” member of the Resistance, scourge of the Nazi empire, and humanity’s last hope for liberty. Only you have the guts, guns, and gumption to return stateside, kill every Nazi in sight, and spark the second American Revolution. So that means one thing, that BJ survived after the end of the first game, as many people are just learning now.

And this is  where our tour of Bethesdaland comes to an end, all in all the showcase itself was about 4o min long significantly shorter from the other showcases, with only a few heavy hitting tittles that were new. Most of the things Bethesda came with this year seem to be remakes or remastered games. Was it worth the extra two hour wait after the Microsoft showcase? Many people say no, that it wasn’t worth it, but others are saying yes that it was totally worth it, but after your tour here, its something that can be left up for you to decide.
