Update: Alan Wake Review – An unforgettable thriller

Alan Wake was originally announced for the Xbox 360 when the console itself was first announced, since then the game was hardly talked about until last year’s E3 where gameplay was finally shown and a release time frame was given. Now Alan Wake has been released, does it live up to the 4 or more years of hype?

The protagonist of the game Alan Wake starts the story off as a famous author who has had trouble writing for the past two years. The game begins with Alan and his wife arriving at a small town called Bright Falls, here Alan had been trying to get away from the stresses of his life and clear his mind. Unfortunately once they get to the small town Alan’s wife goes missing, and the hero of the game finds himself waking up from a car accident he doesn’t remember, on top of this he begins to discover the pages to a manuscript he doesn’t remember writing. Alan soon finds himself uncovering the mysteries of Bright Falls in an attempt to find his wife. While he looks for clues he is stalked by the “taken”, people who seemed to be possessed by the dark force that lives in the shadows of the small town. The only way to battle the dark beings is to use light in a variety of forms alongside the player’s limited supply of guns.

The basic gameplay mechanics are similar to that of any action adventure game, with the unique exception of the left trigger which controls your flashlight other than that players will get a good handle on Alan Wake’s controls. Most of the enemies the player will encounter will require the flashlight to “burn away” the darkness around them, once that’s done a few shots from Alan’s gun will take them down. The whole process of battling the Taken is done well so it never feels tedious or annoying. Other than flashlights and guns Alan also has access to flares which act as safety nets incase the enemies surround the player. Overall the basic gameplay mechanics are solid they’re a nice variation from the typical shooter but not too different so it doesn’t force players to learn a brand new gameplay style.

Graphics and presentation is where Alan Wake truly excels, this is arguably one of the best looking games in the current generation of consoles. Characters are detailed, their movements are fluid and they all feel like believable characters, however what really stands out in Alan Wake is the environment, during the day time the player will be able to see the mountains and forests of bright falls literally for miles several times through the game players will be tempted to just stop and enjoy the scenery. Even during the night when the your vision is limited you can still see far off into the wild, coupled with running rivers and waterfalls Alan Wake delivers some of the best nature scenes in any video game.

Sound is also done very well, the voice actors are very believable in the way they deliver their lines. Sound effects are also done well, in particular the sounds of the taken are creepy and fit in perfectly with the atmosphere the game creates. The music also stands out in Alan Wake the tune changes accordingly to the actions of the player and each episode at the end has a fully composed song that really adds to the TV show presentation.

One of the main features of Alan Wake is the story, above all else players will be driven to continue the game to see what happens to the hero and how he’ll solve the mysteries surrounding the town. The player will find a lot of answer by talking the town people but radio broadcasts from the local radio network will really give players a sense to the happenings of Bright Falls. Also there are TV broadcasts as well, similar to Twilight Zone episodes these shows depict stories of mysteries and strange happenings, overall it sets the mood for the game very well.

If there are any flaws in Alan Wake it’s perhaps the game could’ve offered more gameplay variety to players, at it’s core Alan Wake is still a third person shooter however unlike most other action games it has very limited arsenal. Also when enemies get too close players could find themselves trying to melee them back only to find that you can’t, this can get frustrating on the more difficult settings when the taken can surround you within seconds. The game does make up for this by giving the player flares to drop in front of them to scare of the enemies but you can easily run out if you’re fighting a particularly tough group. However these small points don’t take away from the experience, the developer has taken extra care in making sure that Alan Wake is great game to play through. Everything about Alan Wake achieves a high level of quality and detail, there are few games like Alan Wake to begin with but when you consider the particular effort put into the game and the unique experience it offers Alan Wake becomes a must buy for anyone who enjoys a good story and adventure.

    Zeno Clash Review

Zeno Clash: Ultimate Edition, is a first person brawler with elements of a shooter added in all done in Valve’s Source engine. Developed by a Chilean company called Ace Team, this is their first game that was released through download on Steam back in 2009 for the PC. The team behind this Xbox Live Arcade title had Originally created mods for Doom and Quake. The game setting takes place in a fantasy world of Zenozoik, world where a caveman would deem fit for living. This world is definitely a world of pure imagination, somewhere only dreams could possibly take you.

Zenozoik is filled with all different types of animals like deformed rabbits the size of a mid dog, bugs as big as soft balls, and another type of animal that looks similar to a camel but scaled to a dinosaur. The world is filled with oddities that will attack you wildly, from elephantmen, ogres, and crazed people of the forest named Corwids or Corwids of the Free. You play the role of Ghat, a character that looks like Mad Max meets Jack Sparrow. At the start of the game you find Ghat running from his family for killing his parental figure that they call Father-Mother. Father-Mother is a hermaphroditic being that has raised a large family inside the city of Halstedom. Ghat was chased out of Halstedom by his siblings and needs to fight for his life while doing so. You soon find out what Father-Mother and the families true intentions were as you progress through the game.

The story may not be very original and game play is fairly simple yet sophisticated enough for advanced players to enjoy. Combination punches between light, strong attacks keep your enemies guessing, but the addition of guard breaks and weapons add in a mix.  The weapon selections include skull grenades, a caveman like rifle, dual fish pistols, a crude crossbow, a sledge hammer, a tribal spear, and in one specific level a torch that can throw fireballs. Fighting mechanics in this game are very fun. It was definitely created with a first person brawler feel but the weapon addition for the shooting aspect feels a little clunky. The lock on button is also the same as the pick up object button, at times when in close quarters combat and want to pick up a gun or a health item you tend to lock onto different targets rather than picking up much needed health item. The only way to unlock from anyone is to run away.

The addition of Arena mode and an online multiplayer give the game more replay value. If you’re in the mood for a quick brawl or just want a challenge like the arena, it gives you the option do to so. Arena mode is time attack, the quicker you beat the five levels of the arena the higher you are ranked on the leader board. Arena mode is also a great place to practice your multiple combos, guard breaks, and shooting skills before you start the game. Co-op multiplayer puts you at the top of a pit where you have to work your way down to the bottom. Every platform is breakable and there are different enemies as you go down, so being cautious and planning your attacks are a definite must.

All in all this game is fairly short and found myself playing straight through the entire game in about 4 hours. Although the game was short it doesn’t mean that the game wasn’t fun to play. The story is interesting and the game mechanics are open enough to enjoy in different ways. The story and progression from scene to scene is very linear.  You’re either lead through to an enclosed path from point A to point B, or there are arrows pointing in the direction of what needs to be done. When fighting a boss battle a pop up screen appears before the battle begins hinting at what the weak points are or giving you advice in what to do. The art style is great and the character designs are very imaginative. The only downfall of the character creation of the developers are the constant use of the same characters throughout the entire game.

In the end give this game a shot, it’s definitely a fun game to play. If you’ve thought their wasn’t enough first person games that aren’t shooters out there, well this is the right place. The content is enough to satisfy the 1200 Microsoft points or $15 but keep in mind the adventure is not for everyone.

3D Dot Game Heroes review – a classic of a classic you won’t forget

Many iconic games go through stages of being copied. From your GTA sandbox, God of War precision button tapping and so on. This game at first glance would seem that way as well. However it would be unfair to call it a copy when its a great deal more then that. Simply take an iconic game almost 2 decades old, age it, mix it in with a heap of nostalgia and you got yourself 3D Dot Game Heroes. From Software does a great job of making you feel like a kid again, in more ways then one…

The premise of the game is simply. Legendary hero once vanquished the world of a massive threat, years later the threat arises once more and a new hero needs to prove himself to save the world all over again. Seven dungeons are the key to making this happen, each with a new power and a way to advance within the world. The world was also once 2D but since they had seen a decline in tourism, the king decided to make it all 3D. Bits of comedy are added everywhere, referencing different games and the town folks over adjustments to a 3D environment (yes they actually refer to it).

The game features an assortment of equipment that will be at your disposal as you progress through the game. Classic weapons like a boomerang, shield, hookshot are all too familiar. Modern appeal definitely influences plenty of what goes on in the game though. From its overall humor which is very charming, people complain about their lives and trying to live in 3D. A character creator is also here and is very in-depth. Players can pretty much create anything/one they want, in a blocky 2d to 3d sense. These characters can also be switched at any time when you load the game, giving you a fresh experience when exploring.

The style is one of the games best features. It takes classic gaming and makes it feel retro but new all at the same time. Great polish and water that can have you lose track of time with its gaze. The sound is some of my favorite I’ve heard in quite some time. You will easily be drawn back to some good times playing classic rpgs on the NES and SNES. Everything was well thought out, enemies break apart as blocks when killed, sound and music brings the experience to life.

Now if your still with me on how much a game like this brings back memories, well remember how frustrating it was to beat a certain level? It brings that in as well. Sometimes the game can get rather difficult and has a hard time of explaining what your next objective is. In two separate occasions it had taken us some time to realize who we had to speak to when they gave us no clear indication before hand. Music could use more variety, enemies can get over baring and everyone just simply wants your money. The difference between playing Zelda when you were younger and playing this now, is that you’d cry but keep playing, but now a game like this would lose some of its appeal. These are little flaws to deal with and don’t really take away from it.

3D Dot Game Heroes truly pays homage to one of the greatest games of all time and plenty more. Load screens that take box art from classic rpgs, retrofitted music, quarks, charms, style like no other and moments when you’ll want to pull your hair out are all here like you once remembered it. I’m surprised that more games aren’t like this because developers could definitely learn a thing or two on how to pay tribute to oldschool.
