Call of Duty Black Ops 6 Review: Black Ops is back in best addition in years!

0

After years of ups and downs, Call of Duty has finally returned to form with Black Ops 6, a refreshing and standout entry that sets new standards for the franchise. This installment brings one of the most captivating campaigns we’ve seen in a Call of Duty game in years, packed with unexpected gameplay mechanics, varied mission types, and a perfect blend of both intense and quiet moments that keep you on your toes. Treyarch has crafted a campaign that successfully alternates between tight, linear levels and expansive open areas, offering players a sense of freedom and control over their experience that was missing from recent entries. It’s not afraid to mix things up, with espionage and puzzle-solving elements that are unexpected but incredibly satisfying, especially for a series known for high-octane action.

Black Ops 6 introduces the innovative Omnimovement mechanic, a game-changer across all modes. This fresh addition reinvigorates both single-player and multiplayer experiences without straying too far from what fans love. The campaign is particularly impressive, delivering a layered geopolitical thriller that pays homage to Black Ops: Cold War but with added depth. For those familiar with the series, this installment feels like a welcome evolution, balancing the best of classic, corridor-style shooter gameplay with dynamic, open-world elements that encourage exploration and tactical play.

The Zombies mode is also a highlight, going back to its roots with the classic wave-based attacks, allowing players to relive the excitement of traditional survival gameplay. Though there are fewer maps than some might hope for, the ones included are engaging and add just the right amount of challenge to keep you coming back. Multiplayer, on the other hand, features a mix of strong and slightly less polished maps, though the Omnimovement keeps things fresh enough to engage players for hours on end.

For PC gamers, Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 harnesses NVIDIA DLSS (Deep Learning Super Sampling) technology, bringing a significant performance boost without compromising image quality. By rendering graphics at a lower resolution and using AI to upscale frames in real-time, DLSS increases frame rates, providing smoother gameplay and faster response times, especially at higher graphics settings. This is particularly advantageous in high-stakes multiplayer matches, where every frame can make a difference.

Testing DLSS on a 4080 card with settings maxed out, I achieved approximately 155 FPS in campaign mode, compared to 120 FPS with DLSS turned off. In multiplayer with extreme settings and DLSS enabled, the game averaged around 100 FPS. For competitive players, lowering settings to prioritize low latency and optimal performance is often preferred; with settings minimized and DLSS disabled, I consistently reached about 130-140 FPS. Though it is important to note that the goal is to also lower latency which also can be affected by other factors like ping.

These results highlight the effectiveness of DLSS in delivering high performance without sacrificing visual quality. It’s evident that DLSS allows players to maintain an impressive level of quality with enhanced performance, showing that the technology continues to narrow the gap between quality and speed with each new generation of NVIDIA cards.

While Black Ops 6 is far from perfect, with a few rough edges in the story and multiplayer maps that could use refining, it’s a welcome addition to the series. It offers a thoughtful and satisfying campaign with some of the best set pieces in recent memory, alongside an impressive Zombies mode and a revitalized multiplayer experience. This installment not only serves as a redemption for last year’s installment but also signals a promising future for Call of Duty. For long-time fans and newcomers alike, Black Ops 6 provides an exhilarating experience and stands as one of the series’ strongest entries in years.

Windblown: Early Access Impressions – A Fresh Take on Roguelike Multiplayer Action

0

Roguelike games are making a comeback, and they don’t seem to be going anywhere. We have a new player in town, coming straight from the developers at Motion Twin, who created Dead Cells. Their new game, Windblown, is a breath of fresh air in the roguelike genre. It shares many similarities with the critically acclaimed game Hades, but Windblown definitely takes a different and original approach that sets it apart. Let me explain how this game combines tight mechanics and addictive gameplay that fans expect while introducing a cooperative experience that invites players to join forces in their quest for victory.

Windblown transports players into a beautifully rendered 3D mythical realm where you traverse floating islands. You start by selecting your character, known as a Leaper, and you can change your character at your home base, known as the Ark. In this village, you can purchase weapons, upgrades, and even more options available in the game. Similar to Dead Cells and Hades, each time you play, you attempt to explore the “Vortex,” with each attempt offering a different experience.

In these runs, you have various directions to choose from, along with different buffs, weapons, and bosses. As you progress, these buffs include weapon enhancements, health boosts, loot, upgrades, and more. The farther you travel into the Vortex, the more buffs you receive, and the more of the story unfolds. When you die, you keep all of the items and memories you’ve gained, but you lose all the buffs, needing to restart from the beginning each time you explore the Vortex. This system encourages replayability, as players experiment with different team combinations and strategies.

Unlike popular roguelike games that focus on a single-player experience, Windblown emphasizes cooperative gameplay. Teams of up to three players can dive into dungeons filled with procedurally generated challenges. Each character starts with the stats they have from their single-player mode, and as you progress, you receive separate buffs to choose from. I was able to test out multiplayer, and it felt like a completely different experience, as I had to be considerate of my teammates’ health and contributions during major battles. Players can combine their unique weapons, secondary weapons, and sub-weapons to unleash devastating combos. You also have a shop available and can share currency with your teammates to make purchases easier!

With its cooperative gameplay, rich world, and roguelike mechanics, Windblown offers a captivating alternative to solo adventures like Hades. Developed by the creators of Dead Cells, it promises the same level of polish and engaging gameplay. Windblown provides an exhilarating experience that will keep players coming back for more. As it continues to evolve, this game may well carve out its own niche in the vibrant roguelike landscape. Looking forward to its official release!

Razer Kraken V4 Pro Review: Haptics, High-End Audio, and Immersion Done Right

Gaming audio technology has come a long way, with features like Dolby, THX, and RGB lighting becoming a new high end standard. But while most gaming headsets pick one or two standout features, Razer has gone all-in with the Kraken V4 Pro—combining high-definition haptics, premium audio, and customization for an immersive experience that might be unlike anything else. Let’s dive into what makes this headset a serious contender in the premium audio market.

The Kraken line is no stranger to upgrades over the years, but the Kraken V4 Pro brings a new level of gaming high-end innovation with Sensa HD Haptics. Sensa HD Haptics, which also powers Razer’s new Freyja cushion, is making its debut in the Kraken V4 Pro, this haptic feedback system is designed to mimic the sensations of modern console controllers, but on different devices and is more powerful when accessories are paired. This isn’t your typical bass-rumble haptics; it’s a precisely-tuned feedback system that creates realistic sensations based on in-game events. It adds a layer of immersion that makes standard headsets feel one-dimensional. The V4 Pro is coming with its own base station for quick sound adjustments, the V4 Pro offers everything you need for fully immersive, responsive gameplay.

For long-time Razer fans, the Kraken V4 Pro will look familiar. It retains the classic Kraken shape but adds a few new touches, including a dedicated haptics button and a sleek Sensa HD logo on the headband. The ear cups are thinner and fold flat for easy portability, while the build quality leans more into metal for a premium feel. The precision-drilled ear cups reveal RGB lighting, and the matte black finish gives it a stealthy, high-end look, though it’s currently the only color option.

Comfort is a key aspect, especially for long gaming sessions. The V4 Pro is snug initially, but the memory foam-packed, fabric-wrapped headband and thickly padded faux-leather ear cups break in nicely over time. While faux leather can cause some heat buildup, the V4 Pro provides enough adjustability to maintain a good fit. The notched headband and coiled cables add durability and flexibility, keeping the fit stable without fuss. The headset itself is comfortable but will admit it takes a bit of getting used to, it makes sure it provides a snug fit and initially it was a bit too snug but now have been able to wear them hours on end.

The headset itself is comfortable but will admit it takes a bit of getting used to, it makes sure it provides a snug fit and initially it was a bit too snug but now have been able to wear them hours on end.

The V4 Pro doesn’t skimp on practicality. With on-ear buttons, a USB-C charging port, and a volume rocker, it’s easy to control sound and haptics settings without breaking focus. The retractable boom microphone is a standout feature—sturdy, adjustable, and always within reach. This ensures you won’t misplace it and provides clear, reliable voice capture for team comms or streaming sessions.

The Sensa HD haptics truly shine in games, allowing you to feel directional movements that enhance the action, like feeling the vibrations of a heavy weapon reload or the shudder of an explosive spell. This is not your typical bass-heavy rumble; haptics are synchronized with in-game events, so vibrations feel natural and add depth to the gameplay experience. Even racing games, which we weren’t able to test during the review, would likely benefit greatly from the immersion this headset provides. We were able to experience all of this with Final Fantasy XVI which is one of the compatible games. They have a few games that are currenty supported but do hope the list gets larger with older and newer games in the future!

The Kraken V4 Pro is versatile in connectivity, supporting Razer HyperSpeed Wireless, Bluetooth, USB, and 3.5mm jack. This headset can connect to multiple devices at once, and it really shines in scenarios where you need to multitask. For instance, I connected the V4 Pro to my PS5 and my phone simultaneously, allowing me to talk on Discord or take a call while hearing game audio. It’s a game-changer for those who don’t want to miss out on in-game moments while chatting with friends or handling calls and when I say these headphones are versatile I mean it. Tt provided great audio when I put them through consoles like the Xbox Series X listening to games with audio based HD Haptics and even watched 4k movies in 7.1 surround on a THX certified projector for a great experience. We’re looking to test the Freyja for a ultimate haptics home theater experience soon!

Priced at $399, the Razer Kraken V4 Pro aren’t cheap but offers impressive features that make it a serious investment for gamers who want top-tier performance. With THX Spatial 7.1 surround sound, long battery life, and multi-stream capabilities, it’s more than just a gaming headset—it’s a versatile audio experience. Whether you’re gaming, watching movies, or listening to music, the V4 Pro’s rich features and customization options allow you to tailor every detail to your preference, making it a must-have for any serious gamer. It’s a whole new way to experience gaming audio. If you’re ready for haptics, crystal-clear sound, and true immersion, this headset delivers on every front.

Eufy Omni S1 Pro Review: A Next-Level Robot Vacuum for Ultimate Cleaning Efficiency

0

In a sea of robot vacuums that seem to be blending into one another, Eufy has taken a bold step forward with the release of their top of the line Eufy Omni S1 Pro. With innovative features and a design that sets it apart from the others, the Omni S1 Pro is making waves in home automation and cleaning technology. Having tried many robot vacuums, I can confidently say that the S1 Pro is now my go-to device for keeping my floors spotless.

At the core of the Eufy Omni S1 Pro shines with the Floor Washing System. Unlike traditional robot mops, the S1 Pro’s mop is constantly refreshed in real-time at 170 RPM, removing even the tiniest, invisible dirt particles within its range. With 1 kg of downward pressure, it does a good job of getting into hard floors. The dual water reservoir system, equipped with ozonated water, ensures your mop is always clean and ready for the next task, delivering unmatched floor cleaning. While not the quietest vacuums, it moves rather efficiently and can tell its going to work!

The UniClean Station is the base home unit which has been one of my favorite designs for these types of robo vacuums . This isn’t just a base for recharging—the 10-in-1 system handles everything from auto emptying and refilling to detergent dispensing and even heated air drying. The station also sterilizes the water used for mopping, eliminating 99.99% of bacteria like E. coli.. It’s a fully automated cleaning powerhouse that takes care of the vacuum so you can let it do its thing.

While the mopping system is what makes it for me, the 8,000 Pa suction is no slouch when it comes to vacuuming. Whether on carpets or hard floors, the S1 Pro’s suction power pulls up debris, pet hair, and dust with ease. For a hybrid vacuum and mop system, it does an impressive job. The powerful suction ensured that I got a even clean, especially when transitioning from hard floors to carpets which is completely balanced in my apartment.

One interesting thing this Vacuum has I’ve only seen one other time is its square-shaped design, which is crafted for corner-to-edge cleaning. Most robot vacuums struggle to reach edges and corners, but the S1 Pro navigated these tricky areas with ease. The sleek, sports car-inspired build doesn’t just look cool—it allows the vacuum to move smoothly around furniture and into tight spaces, adding to its overall efficiency.

Speaking more on the water/mop features, it has a ozonated water system that sterilizes the clean water reservoir, a feature I’ve never seen before in a robot vacuum. This not only removes harmful bacteria but ensures that the mop is always using sanitized water for cleaning. When you’re mopping your floors, knowing that the water is 99.99% free of bacteria provides peace of mind, especially for households with kids or pets especially since my daughter has begun crawling.

The Eufy Home app pairs seamlessly with the S1 Pro, allowing for intuitive control and scheduling of cleaning tasks. The app provides real-time monitoring and customization options, from adjusting cleaning modes to setting cleaning schedules. It’s simple to use and gives you full control over the device, making everyday cleaning more efficient and less time-consuming.

The most surprising thing about the Eufy Omni S1 Pro isn’t any one feature but the it’s the price. Coming in at around $1400 this is not a budget-friendly option, which in some cases Eufy is known to have some affordability, this is a unit that they crafted a lot of care in and it’s worth every penny. Its ability to both mop and vacuum saves space, with clean and dry solutions makes it an ideal solution for smaller homes or apartments where floor care devices are already a challenge to store. If your home is primarily carpeted, you might find other vacuums more suited to pet hair and deep carpet cleaning, but for a hybrid system, the S1 Pro holds its own on both hard floors and carpets.

The Eufy Omni S1 Pro is more than just a robot vacuum—it changes how you’ll be cleaning your floors at home. With its advanced floor washing system, 10-in-1 UniClean Station, powerful suction, and smart design, it outperforms most of the competition. While it’s on the pricier side, the features and efficiency it brings to your home make it a worthy investment for those serious about keeping their floors spotless. Whether you have hard floors, carpets, or both, the Omni S1 Pro delivers top-tier cleaning with minimal effort on your part and that’s what I’ve enjoyed most about it. Definitely a hybrid vacuum and mop that you should check out!

Ekrin Bantam Massage Gun – Review: Great Marathoner Sidekick To Recovery

0

With the NYC Marathon just around the corner, excitement is in the air as runners prepare for one of the biggest challenges of their running journey. While training and mental preparation are crucial, don’t underestimate the power of recovery and muscle care. Awareness of performance and recovery is more evident than ever. Massage guns play an important role not only in performance and recovery but also in your overall maintenance on your fitness journey. I had the pleasure of taking a look at Ekrin’s Bantam Percussion Massage Gun—a compact, powerful tool that can make a significant difference for all you runners out there.

The Ekrin Bantam is notable for its size. At 50% smaller than Ekrin’s other models like the B37 or Kestrel, it easily fits into your running bag or even a small backpack. But don’t let its compact design fool you; this device packs a punch. Weighing just over a pound, the Bantam is lightweight yet robust, making it easy to carry without adding extra bulk to your gear. It’s designed with three adjustable pressure and speed settings, allowing you to tailor your experience to your specific needs. These settings are a great feature; you can choose a gentle warm-up to ease into your run or a deeper massage to relieve tightness after a long training session. Regardless, the Bantam is able to accommodate both. This versatility makes it suitable for both pre-run activation and post-run recovery, ensuring your muscles get the care they need at every step (pun intended).

For such a small device, it has an impressive battery life. The Ekrin Bantam boasts an impressive six-hour battery life. I was able to use it repeatedly throughout the day without worrying about recharging, which is especially valuable on marathon day when you’ll want to maximize your recovery time after the race. I simply let it charge overnight, and it was ready for the next day.

The device comes with four specialized attachments designed to target different muscle groups and areas of tension. Whether you need to focus on your calves, quads, glutes, or even tricky spots like your lower back, these attachments allow for a personalized massage experience. The soft, durable materials ensure comfort while effectively relieving soreness and stiffness. It also comes with a sleek carrying case, making transporting the Bantam a breeze. You don’t need to be a marathon runner either; this is for all athletes, ensuring you can take your recovery routine with you and never skip a beat. The case keeps everything organized and protected, making it a smart choice for athletes on the go.

As you gear up for the NYC Marathon, remember that preparation goes beyond just the miles you run. The Ekrin Bantam percussion massage gun is more than just a regular massage gun—it’s a quality tool that can enhance your performance and accelerate your recovery. By incorporating it into your routine, you can not only enjoy your marathon experience to the fullest but also set yourself up for success in future races. The original price is $149.99, but as of the writing of this article, it’s on sale for $105.00 directly on their site!

Electrify Expo 2024 – EV Strong!

We attended our third Electrify Expo in New York which was a vibrant showcase of cutting-edge electric vehicles (EVs) and sustainable mobility technologies. Here’s our small synapsis of what we thought of the event overall. Upon entering, you’re greeted by a blend of futuristic designs and the hum of innovation. From sleek electric cars, bikes, and scooters to charging infrastructure and solar tech, it’s a space filled with promise for a cleaner future. The event was powered by Anker this year.

A standout moment was seeing custom builds, like a stunning resto-mod Ford Bronco that perfectly blended classic style with modern electric power, and a blacked-out Cybertruck that looked like something straight out of a sci-fi film. There was even an appearance by the Tesla Bot, though unfortunately, no live demo was given. Still, the presence of these tech marvels added to the excitement in the air.

The E-bikes were another big highlight, showcasing the latest and greatest developments in electric biking. There were bikes of all ranges and sizes, from companies based all over the world, proving that electric mobility is expanding beyond cars. You could explore lightweight commuter bikes, high-powered mountain bikes, and everything in between. Best of all, attendees had the chance to test-drive not only the bikes but also the scooters and even the cars themselves, making it a hands-on experience that brought the future of transportation to life.

In addition to vehicles, the expo featured entire ecosystems of sustainable technology that accompanied vehicles like solar panels, energy-efficient home charging setups, and apps to optimize energy use and vehicle maintenance. The atmosphere was charged with optimism as discussions revolved around advancements in battery technology, expanding EV infrastructure, and the broader environmental impact. It’s clear that the electrification of transportation is not just a trend but a movement reshaping industries and the way we live.

Britax Willow Grove SC Baby Travel System Review: A Seamless Travel Solution for Your Little One

0

Ever since welcoming our baby girl, we’ve been on the lookout for products that make parenting as smooth and stress-free as possible. While perfection is a lofty goal, the Britax Willow Grove SC baby travel system comes pretty close to hitting that mark. This infant car seat and stroller combo has been a game-changer for us, offering safety, comfort, and convenience—all in one.

The Willow Grove SC system includes the Willow™ SC infant car seat, the Alpine™ car seat base, and the Grove™ modular stroller. The design is modern and sleek, with a variety of colors that match the description perfectly. This travel system looks as good in person as it does on the website, and its build quality immediately stands out. The materials used are naturally flame-retardant, free from added chemicals, which provides peace of mind for safety-conscious parents.

One of our biggest concerns with any baby gear is installation, especially when it comes to car seats. Thankfully, Britax’s ClickTight® technology makes installation straightforward and secure. It only takes three easy steps: open, thread & buckle, and click it closed. This simplicity takes away the anxiety of whether the car seat is installed correctly and safely. Though we had some minor issues with the car seat latching onto the base at first, it turned out to be a matter of getting familiar with the process. Once we got the hang of it, it became second nature.

The overall assembly of the stroller and car seat combo was easy, and we felt confident in its sturdiness. Even the stroller’s conversion from car seat mode to stroller mode is surprisingly painless—a major plus when you’re navigating busy city streets.

The Willow Grove SC baby travel system is designed with comfort and safety at its core. The rear-facing car seat features the RightSize™ system, allowing for adjustments at the hips, shoulders, and between the legs to ensure the perfect fit for your infant. This attention to detail extends to the stroller’s CozyFit™ insert, making it possible for babies as small as 10 lbs to ride comfortably. The insert can be removed to accommodate children up to 50 lbs, giving this travel system impressive room to grow with your child.

The stroller itself offers six different positions, including both parent-facing and forward-facing options. This flexibility means your baby can enjoy facing you during those early months and later look out into the world as they grow. The UPF 50+ canopy with a flip-down sunshade is a thoughtful addition, providing ample protection from both sun and rain.

When it comes to everyday use, the Grove stroller has proven to be a dream. Its all-wheel suspension and tough, no-flat tires make for a smooth ride—even on the notoriously bumpy streets of New York City. Switching between stroller and car seat modes is seamless, allowing us to move confidently from car to sidewalk without hassle.

Storage is another area where the Willow Grove SC shines. The extra-large cargo basket and five additional pockets give you more than enough room for all the essentials. We’ve managed to pack everything we need for a day out without feeling like we’ve left anything behind. The stroller’s one-step fold mechanism is also a lifesaver, packing up neatly while leaving plenty of trunk space to spare.

Safety is, of course, a top priority, and the Willow Grove SC delivers on that front. The ReboundReduce™ stability bar on the Alpine car seat base helps minimize movement in the event of a crash, providing added peace of mind. Additionally, the base-free stability feature, with an extra belt path on the back of the seat, offers added security when installing without the base. The SafeWash car seat cover is another great touch—it’s washer and dryer-friendly, making clean-up quick and easy after inevitable messes.

After several months of use, the Britax Willow Grove SC baby travel system has proven to be a reliable, sturdy, and versatile option for parents on the move. Despite a minor learning curve with the car seat latching mechanism, we now find it effortless to use. Our little one seems comfortable and secure, whether she’s cruising in the car or exploring the city in the stroller. The flexibility, ease of use, and thoughtful design details make the Britax Willow Grove SC a must-have for any family looking to simplify their travels with a baby.

If you’re looking for a travel system that can adapt to your growing child, provide a smooth ride on various terrains, and offer ample storage for all your essentials, the Britax Willow Grove SC is definitely worth considering. It has become an indispensable part of our daily routine, and we can’t wait to explore more features like the bassinet as our baby grows.

Final Fantasy XVI PC Review – Graphical Lush & Adventure

0

Final Fantasy XVI was recently released on PC, and I finally got my hands on this long-awaited game. The Final Fantasy series has come a long way, being a pioneer in the realm of role-playing games. It’s known for its stunning visuals, rich storytelling, diverse worlds, and innovative gameplay mechanics. Over the past few titles, Square Enix has gradually moved away from its turn-based combat and fantasy-driven worlds, opting instead for a more adult-themed action RPG that appeals to a modern audience. Final Fantasy XVI continues this shift away from the classic RPG style by renovating the game entirely, making it the most different title in the franchise. There are some significant changes—some for the better and some not.

This is definitely the most original Final Fantasy I’ve ever played in the series. When I started playing, I immediately noticed the stunning visuals and amazing voiceovers, which are what I would expect from Square Enix. At the same time, I was taken back by the story, gameplay, and vast world of Valisthea that’s filled with Crystals, Eikons, and their dominants. I’ve always been a fan and played Final Fantasy since I was a kid. Let me tell you, this game is definitely not suited for children; it is more geared toward an older audience. To be transparent, those who are familiar with the series might not have their expectations met. If Game of Thrones and Devil May Cry had a baby and named it Final Fantasy XVI, this would be that game. This game takes a very different direction, more surprising than not, but I don’t think that’s necessarily a bad direction to take. The blood, deaths, cursing, are adult content I’ve never seen the series express in so much detail.

I waited for the PC launch so I could get the best Final Fantasy experience. This version takes everything to a new level with higher resolution textures and ray tracing; the stunningly realistic reflections and shadows really bring the world to life. Plus, with variable refresh rates, I was able to say goodbye to screen tearing and enjoy a much smoother gaming experience. The performance is impressive, too. You can hit frame rates far beyond the usual 30 or 60 FPS limits on consoles, and with customizable settings, you can fine-tune the graphics to match your setup perfectly. Thanks to technologies like NVIDIA’s DLSS and AMD’s FSR, the game looks fantastic while running smoothly, even at higher resolutions. It’s a major upgrade that truly takes advantage of modern gaming tech. DLSS 3 with Super Resolution and Frame Generation, DLAA, and Reflex are what players can experience FINAL FANTASY XVI with the right Nvidia graphics cards

Clive Rosfield is definitely one of my favorite protagonists in the series. He’s a badass with a heart who takes crap from no one. After Chapter 1, I was hooked and felt immersed in Clive’s ambitions. Every relationship he has—with Cid, Joshua, Jill, and those from his past—is rich and has a different dynamic. This is just one of the many things that make this Final Fantasy different from the others. Clive is the only playable character in the story. I was left with the wrong impression when I got to use my brother Joshua in Chapter 1, hoping this would follow a similar play style to Final Fantasy VII Remake. But that’s not the case; this scenario is short-lived and only occurs for a part of the story. You have characters like Jill who join your team, and your buddy Torgal. Torgal is your mythical pet dog that you can give commands to attack, and heal. However, none of them are actual playable characters.

This single-character approach extends to all areas of the game, including combat. This was a big deal for me, as I’m used to having a party of characters by my side that I can manage and develop throughout my journey. Final Fantasy XV adopted a similar approach, but you still had some control over your teammates’ growth and involvement in combat. FF XVI takes it a step further away by removing that entirely. This was new to me and very unexpected. Final Fantasy is known for its in-depth battles and strategic team-based gameplay, but XVI opts for a more hack-and-slash approach, feeling a bit too hack and slash. While this was fun, I missed having a team with varied classes by my side. I’m used to having a teammate buffing me and another casting healing spells. Combat was intense but didn’t require much strategy, it was leaning more toward button-mashing skills. Precision dodging felt overly rewarding, and simple buffs like Faith and Protect—staples in the genre—aren’t skills you can regularly perform during combat.

Regardless of the big changes and the loss of a few elements, you still feel that this is a Final Fantasy game. From the blacksmith, sound design, familiar enemies, Eikons, and flawless cutscenes, these elements ensure you feel immersed in the Final Fantasy universe. As you level up and gain ability points (AP), you can apply them to specific skills for combat. You can acquire different skills depending on the Eikons you use in battle. This was cool; I found myself resetting and trying out different Eikons and skill sets. There are plenty of side quests, weapons, armor, and hunts. I had a blast going through all the side quests before diving back into the main story. When you complete a specific side quest, you eventually gain access to ride a Chocobo! This was useful for getting around, as this game uses a more linear semi-open structure, similar to Final Fantasy XIII. You can travel back to previously visited locations, but all you have to do is select the main map and pick your next destination. So, no open world for you open-world fans.

Square Enix has been bold in taking this more adult direction and reinventing Final Fantasy. It’s one of a kind in the series and a step away from its usual approach to RPGs. Final Fantasy didn’t swing and miss on this one, but they didn’t hit the homerun they’re known for, either. The lack of characters in combat and the hack-and-slash mechanics make it feel less like an RPG and more like an action game with Final Fantasy elements. If they had included more characters and a feature to switch between them in combat, like in FF VII Remake, it would have made the game feel more like a traditional RPG. I’m used to the mental stakes of long battles, casting Phoenix, and using numerous skills and magic. Relying on button-mashing attacks and dodging felt a bit repetitive. Nevertheless, I think they’ve taken a step in the right direction. The Eikon battles were truly some of the most epic moments I’ve experienced in Final Fantasy in a long time. There’s also the DLC which I have yet to play, and can’t wait to start that up. I genuinely look forward to Final Fantasy XVII; I’ve grown with the genre, and I appreciate that they are open to change and trying new things.
