A trip to Anime Boston Part 1

0

It’s been a while but I’m finally back from my trip to Anime Boston! It was really fun. Despite the long bus ride there, it was well worth it.

We left early Thursday and got there in the evening (no thanks to the heavy traffic passing through Connecticut…). When we arrived, we checked into our hotel rooms and picked up our con badges. It was really quick since there weren’t many people there yet and technology can make things pretty fast! I didn’t even need to print anything so I got to save paper too, ha ha!

Anyway, we decided to hang around for a bit and went to eat dinner. It was nice to relax that evening especially after a 5 hour trip (which turned into nearly 7 hours because of rain and traffic) and we knew that the next 3 days would be pretty hectic! I didn’t cosplay but I was in Fairy Kei and Lolita! It was wonderful~

On Friday, since I was staying with people that were selling, we all woke up early for breakfast and to get ready. I wore a simple black and purple theme Fairy Kei outfit that sadly I don’t I have images of! But people did take photos of me so I hope to find them. I wore pink platform sneakers and Holley Tea Time OTK socks. My skirt was black and purple with lots of lace, patterns and ruffles. It even had two bows decorating it that were attached to each other by a strand of purple pearls. My tops were a pink tank top and a purple shirt with a panda on it over that. My wig was a pink and purple split long pigtail wig and of course I put tons of accessories on! I didn’t know what to call it but I loved it!

For the most part, I spent most of Friday walking around, taking photos of cosplay and checking out the Dealer’s Room and Artist Alley. I was really impressed by everything at Anime Boston. There were a lot of great cosplayers. And the Artist Alley and Dealer’s Room were huge! And even with the amount of people that were attending, there was a decent amount of breathing space. Staff was pretty nice and even most of the attendees acted civil and not like a bunch of crazy people. And one of my top favorite parts about it was that the convention center was tied to a mall! We didn’t shop but it was still pretty cool.

After running through the shopping areas, I decided to check out the panel called “Dubs That Time Forgot” run by Mike Toole from Anime News Network. Now this doesn’t mean they were all terrible dubs – the panel also covered anime that most people outside of Japan probably missed or it just got lost in the huge wave of dubs that were released. (Some of them were kinda bad though.)

Did you know that there was an anime called “Christopher Columbus”? It was kind of interesting and actually showed Columbus’ life from when he was a child and how he would grow up to become an explorer. It was originally made in 1992 but we didn’t see a dub until 2002 (and we only got 4 episodes lol). There were others like “Grey: Digital Target” which was made back in 1986 about a post apocalyptic world that is run by a master computer that isn’t exactly into helping mankind anymore. It was really violent and graphic for something back in the day. And if there’s anything I will remember from that anime is this one line said by the main character: “I don’t wanna become a corpse by carrying a corpse.”

The panel also showed clips from “Tokyo Mew Mew” which used to air on TV by 4Kids. So you can already tell how the panel covered both ends of the spectrum. There were more interesting dubs that I had never heard of before like this one from the 1970s about a boy that when he puts on his roller skates, he would be a super hero that attacks with said skates! Another old one was very much like Kimba the White Lion or The Lion King but about bears. In this particular forest, there is a “kingdom” of bears with a queen that just gave birth. But her son is a panda! Everyone is in an uproar and the baby panda goes on a long journey to find out the truth. Pretty interesting for an anime meant for children.

After the panel, I went back into the Dealer’s Room to check on my friend who actually publishes her own manga series! It’s called “Sacred” – you should totally check it out! And as I said before, most of the people I was staying with were selling their works. Here’s the list:

I even made a new friend at the con who was also selling in the Artist Alley (which is where I went back to after Dealer’s Room closed). Please also check out Sorbet Jungle at: http://www.artfire.com/ext/shop/studio/sorbetjungle

That’s all for part 1! So sorry these will be long posts but it really was a great con!

Samsung Galaxy S4 software update adds improvements

0

Now that the Samsung Galaxy S4 has seen the light of day for a couple of weeks now, the consumer requests for changes have come and are relatively doable by way of updates.

Due to the requests, Samsung will begin to roll out updates to fix a variety of issues consumers have found with their phones. Though they won’t be able to make their phones more easily rootable, the company will be fixing issues that users have been exposed to.

One of the biggest quips in the initial software of the S4 has been the inability for users to move apps and games to the SD card. What moving the apps to SD allows Android users to do is move part of the package, or apk, to the SD card in order to allow less room to be taken up in the phone. With the 16gb S4 models being shipped with a massive amount of pre-installed software – leaving the user with only 9.15gb of actual room – having this feature is vital in loading up phones with all the software one would like.

With the addition the ability to move apps to the SD card, SamMobile reports that 80mb will be freed from the phone’s internal storage to give the user 9.23gb of free space to work with.

A new fix that will come with the update is one that at times became cumbersome is the Smart Pause – a feature that detects when a user looks away from the phone in order to pause videos and resume them when they look back at the screen.

The non-blurred icon on the top of the notification bar is the Smart Pause icon that remains on. With the update, Smart Pause will be able to be toggled rather than remain consistently on.

The update will also add a couple of other features.

-New Camera firmware
-Smearing issue has been fixed (Purple effect while scrolling)
-HDR Video (Can record HDR video)
-Semi-transparent status bar
-New Icons in Settings
-Secure boot status (About Phone)
-Increase legibility (Display) (New feature)

At the moment, the software is “only available for the Snapdragon-powered Galaxy S4 (GT-I9505),” according to SamMobile, but they report of confirmation that the software update will be available for the Exynos-powered Galaxy S4 (GT-I9500).

Injustice Red Son pack 2 dlc details + screens

Injustice is set to release its third playable DLC character Scorpion but not without shedding some light on new dlc skins on the horizon. While not exactly sure if this is a leak or not but we know that Injustice will be releasing a Red Son’s 2 pack. The revealed characters are Green Lantern, Batman (known as Batmankoff) and Red Son Deathstroke. This is all a part of the Red Son comic series which tells the stories if Super Heroes were in Russia. This also started off with the release of Superman Wonder Women and Solomon Grundy of the same world. We’re not entirely sure when it comes out but believe to be next week when the third character is set to drop and will be updating with video as well. Below and above you’ll find screens of the characters but send us your thoughts on what skins pack should they explore next?

E3 On The Horizon

0

E3 is right around the corner and we all know we’re looking for as much info on the Xbox One and Playstation 4 (sorry Wii U you’re second string this year). With all the new hype of the Xbox One and the unfortunate news of the limitations of it I.E. the needing to be online and the Kinect always being on, we’re all waiting to see what other stuff is lined up for Xbox One and the other developers. The Playstation 4 will hopefully give a full release on what it will be capable of and the opening lineup. All that said and done, I’m sure we’re looking forward to all the developers and their offerings. From sports buffs to FPS fanatics there’s plenty to come for us, but the real question is what are you guys looking forward to? What console and what games?

NBA 2k14 cover athlete revealed, game will be available on next gen consoles

During game one of the NBA Finals last night, viewers got a taste of who is going to be on the cover of the next 2K Sports NBA game. A rather vague commercial led to speculation of who it could be, but by the end good ol’ LeBron James popped his head out and revealed himself as being the next cover athlete.

With the announcement comes no speculation on what the pre-order bonus will be because it has already been announced. Pre-ordering the game will give users the “King James Bonus Pack.” The bonus pack will include in-game extras.

Fine print shows the bonus pack only being available for the Playstation 3 and Xbox 360, but who knows if it will be released later on for next-gen consoles.

With the release of the Xbox One and the Playstation 4 seemingly around the corner, NBA 2K14 will be released for both systems on their respective launch days, according to a Forbes conference call with Jason Argent, the 2K Sports senior vice president of operations.

Argent said LeBron has been “actively involved” in the development of the next NBA game and has offered opinions on what he finds should be changed in the game.

For the first time in three years, 2K will have a competitor for a professional basketball game when Electronic Arts’ NBA Live series makes its return. James being on the cover helps 2K because of his current popularity and even more with his recent MVP trophy win and his presence in the NBA Finals, his name will be everywhere (NBA-related).

The game will be released on October 1, initially for the Xbox 360 and PS3. Argent said 2K will not be releasing a Wii U version of the game. Catch NBA 2K14 at E3 in Los Angeles next week.

Deadpool Hands On impressions

1

Deadpool is not the first or hell even the last character that one would think of making an entire game based off of. He’s not a good guy, he’s technically not evil. He’s delusional, psychotic, and insane among other similar outlandish traits. Somehow his dickish, sarcastic, witty banter make for a hell of an idea for a game. Activision and Marvel have entrusted this to High Moon Studios for the job of bringing this character to life in a way that could only fit Deadpool. We got a demonstration and hands on impression of the game thats going to drop later this month.

The first thing we noticed is that he is fully self aware that he is in a video game and that he wants to ultimately be featured in one. If you get the subject at hand and what this does for a character like Deadpool, then you know it’s pretty solid material. Starting out in his apartment before even getting into a mission there is plenty to actually mess around with like go to the bathroom. Once he was ready for action, we got our first mission.

This game has a very familiar style of play, as many third person action shooters do. You will be able to upgrade weapons for more moves and stronger attacks. Some of the key differences is the franticness and ability to chain all sorts of combos and attacks together. Each melee weapon and gun also has its own stealth kill, yes while hard to believe, Deadpool has stealth attacks. There are even some areas where it is preferred to do so.

DP-Light-Em-Up

When performing combos you will raise the focus meter on the corner which has a set of four bars. Each bar lets you do a different move that attacks all enemies at once in the vicinity. There doesn’t seem to be an auto aim for guns that we’ve noticed but given the high fire rate we didn’t mind that much. As of now and are sure in the final version will only ship with two modes being the campaign and the challenge mode.

Much of the game you will be coming across other Marvel heroes that he actually encounters in Deadpool comic scenarios. We had the pleasure of being introduce to Cable which not surprisingly brings you a message from the future. Some of what makes this game great so far is that wall it breaks for Deadpool and player interaction. Much of the game he puts himself in the 4th person view, trying to engage with you while your playing … him. An example is Cable debriefing Deadpool on what is going on in the future and how to prevent it, Deadpool is only hearing what he wants to hear and actually starts to fall asleep, commanding you to put him out of his misery to make it stop.

While the experience is in a linear fashion, there looks to be hidden unlockables, easter eggs, currency for weapons and different elements of play like fighting off hordes of enemies with a helicopter. High Moon Studios is delivering a unique form of story telling which fans will definitely appreciate and its level of humor. Nolan North who voices Deadpool and Deadpool writer Daniel Way which penned the story do a superb job of bringing this character to life. Expect our full review when it hits store shelfs on June 25th for the Xbox 360, PS3 and PC.
