The way consumers want to watch their movies and play games is not as simple as just hooking it up to your TV. Consumers want some level of immersion whether it be through a sound bar or an entire home theater. Just like the adaption of HD TV, then 3D and now 4K can be said about sound as well. Without going into great detail on all the aspects we are now at a state where companies like Dolby, DTS and Auro created 3D immersive sound not only in theaters but now within the home. This requires that sound come from above and or come down at you, as if you’re hearing things above as well as all around.
Whether we’ve been taking normal surround sound speakers and placing them above or using Dolby Atmos certified up-firing speakers we didn’t have a speaker that could do both until now of course. The SVS Prime Elevation speaker may quite possibly be the king of versatility.
Hardware/Design
These speakers boast a 1” aluminum dome tweeter, authoritative 4.5” mid-woofer and are designed to give you the maximized sound that can come out of them at anytime give the cabinet is engineered for maximum sonic impact and immersion. It comes with speaker mounts that can be place directly on the wall. I personally wanted a bit more flexibility and since these speakers are heavier then usual I went out and got some Monoprice swivel mounts that fit perfect with it. The angled shape of the speaker is not for esthetics but to give you the perfect case use which could be anything from speakers above your tv (my orientation), speakers above on your sides, up-firing them on top of other speakers or by themselves. These are probably the best looking speakers I have owned at this point, they fit perfectly if not better then anything I have setup so having more of these would definitely not be a bad thing.
Sound
This is the part where these speakers shine because no matter where you put them they’re going to sound like they were meant for that placement. Whether you’re up-firing them or down-firing them they create such a rich sound that it will travel exactly where it needs to get to you while delivering that immersion. Bandwidth rated at 55Hz-25kHz with a recommended watt power of 20-150. These speakers pack a punch, especially when setup in elevation for down-firing. In most cases they sounded better then my infinity Primus bookshelf speakers I have setup for surround and these are half the size. While gaming I could here mids and lows and superb quality which is what I would want. Bottomline
If you’re looking to up your home theater setup and are getting into immersive sound whether it be Dolby Atmos, DTS:X or Auro 3D you won’t be disappointed on setting up a pair of these. Not the cheapest at $200 per speaker but aside the overall quality you get, this also competes with some top brands. You also have a speaker/s which can be used in any position which most can’t say that. For more info on the SVS Prime Elevation speaker you can find it here.

We finally got to see what the Nintendo Switch is all about. So what was my reaction to the Nintendo Switch presentation, did I think it was bad or awesome? Like so many Nintendo fans I was looking forward to this presentation, I thought this was Nintendo turning over a new leaf and showing that they’ve learned from their mistakes but it turns out they kind of didn’t. I don’t think Nintendo did bad but it wasn’t good either. The third party support is their main problem, but the Switch still looks like a cool console.
Check out the video for a full detailed run through on what I thought exactly.
The Nintendo Switch presentation has happened and with it a bunch of new information about the console has been revealed, LVLONE plans on going further into the details and what this means for Nintendo but here are the big news from the event that you need to know.
Price and Release Date
Nintendo will launch the Switch on March 3, 2017 simultaneously in the US, Japan, Canada and some of Europe. The console will retail at $299.99, the package has the Switch itself along with the Joy-Con controllers, Joy-Con grip and the usual cables and adapters. The Pro controller is sold separately.
Online Service
In a surprising move Nintendo announced their online service will free until Fall 2017, after that it will move to a paid subscription but they haven’t mentioned price. The only other detail we got was that the online service will include an exclusive app that players will use to connect to their friends online.
Nintendo Switch Games Announced
There were of course several new games announced at the presentation, the first is 1-2-Switch which is a motion controlled competitive game, a trailer showed off mini-games like sword combat and a few other party games. The second title announced was Arms, motion-controlled arena combat game where players use over-sized arm like boxing gloves. Arms supports split-screen, and online multiplayer.
Splatoon 2 was the next big announcement, the game looks like a what you’d expect in a sequel to the popular squid shooter. Splatoon 2 has new weapons, new arenas and new gameplay options, the game will launch this summer.
Super Mario Odyssey was easily the biggest announcement, as rumored the game is closer in style to Mario 64 and Mario Sunshine. Super Mario Odyssey looks like a sprawling open world game with big levels to explore. In a strange twist, parts of the game seem to take place in a New York City like area complete with realistic looking people. Super Mario Odyssey will be released holiday 2017.
There were a few other games that were announced, Xenoblade Chronicles 2, Fires Emblem Warriors, a new Shin Megami Tensei, and Project Octopath Traveler. Most of these games were teased with a trailer without much details.
Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
Breath of the Wild releases on March 3 alongside of the Switch. A new trailer was shown and two special editions were also revealed called The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild Master Edition for $129.99 and a standard special edition for $99.99.
That’s most of the information we have now but stay tuned to LVLONE for more information on the Switch including our detailed look and reaction to the presentation.
Connected speakers in the home are growing as much as the speakers are getting smaller. They either connect to each other or can be controlled and programmed from distances. We got a chance to check out a few at CES 17 and here are some that stood out.
Single Speaker
Soundcast haven’t been around all that long but they’re looking to make splash with superior sound in small boxes. The VG1 is a small yet rugged speaker which doesn’t compromise sound to be a speaker for your travels. When paired the stereo sound coming out of them could fill a room, not to mention that the speaker can not only withstand serious conditions but is water proof as well.
Klipsch always comes out strong with being a strong and last performer in the speaker market, some of their latest toys included a set of wireless speakers that gave you a classic look while have great sound out of the box. The One has a luxury look by having real wood veneer, also sports an 8 hour battery life, can be connect via bluetooth and can sync with other speakers of its kind.
B&O Play have been making a number of speakers and headphones with a very elegant and sophisticated design pallet. Their newest speaker keeps it in this tradition. BEOPLAY M5 gives you a true 360 of sound experience and for a small speaker it had range. The speaker can sync up to four but can be mixed and matched with any other of B&O’s other elegant speakers. It might be the most expensive speaker in this size but this looks to be a speaker that truly disappears with the room.
There was clearly much more going on at CES but this was just a snippet of some of the best I’ve experienced. Stay tuned as I’ll be giving more round ups of the best the show had to offer.
personal earbuds and headphones are all over CES every year but the innovation never stops. This year gave us superior sound or wireless play. We got a chance to check out a few at CES 17 and here are some that stood out.
Personal audio
RHA’s line of earbuds are some of the higher quality of listening experiences you can get from earbuds. They range from the very affordable MA350 to the flagship line the CL1 Ceramic. Each sounding better then the last the CL1 Ceramic is true sound to the ears. If you couple this with their Dacamp L1 audio amplifier then that might be as good as it gets.
Jlab was sporting their new wireless noise canceling headphones. Flex gives your 30 hours of battery life on bluetooth and has a 40mm driver all with an affordable price tag. It’s also one of the most rugged headphones we’ve tried on as you can really stress it and know it won’t break on you.
House of Marley brings the popular Positive Vibration with Positive Vibration 2. They will be released wired and wirelessly and staying true to the Marley wood look and feel. One of the lower end costing headphones but still sounding great while doing it.
Many companies are coming out with true wireless earbuds but Bragi seems to be hitting a sweet spot here. All on ear functions worked well when using it and had a good natural fit with a good sound overall. Stay tuned as we’ll take a deeper dive into these wireless earbuds soon!
A new company releasing the first ever smart headphones was showing off the latest build. Vinci headphones has a color display on each side showcasing not only the song playing but other functions like custom graphics. The headphones are said to learn pattern behavior and an assistant like program within helps you with tasks by command.
There was clearly much more going on at CES but this was just a snippet of some of the best I’ve experienced. Stay tuned as I’ll be giving more round ups of the best the show had to offer.
