Review: Rift

0

Last month Trion Worlds released Rift to the masses of MMO players across the world. It’s been a little over a month and people have been claiming that it’s either a World of Warcraft killer or a World of Warcraft clone. Whichever it is, we got the chance to play it and review it for our readers.

The game takes place in the fantasy world of Telara, a sort of central station for all the different dimensions or worlds. The death god Regulos has caused different rifts to open on Telara, slowly bringing armies to conquer the different territories throughout the land. To prevent the take over two factions of Telara the Guardians and Defiants fight to cleanse the world of the invaders.

Guardians are resurrected by the Vigil after dying during one of the earlier conflicts with Regulos. At the start of the story your Guardian character fights and dies against one of Regulos’ commanders, only to be brought back and start the current path that you choose. Players are able to choose from the high elves, the Mathosians, and dwarves.

Defiant were resurrected after a battle that has almost completely decimated Telara. Players who choose Defiant are sent back in time to the beginning of the invasions, allowing them to fight alongside the Guardians. Defiants are those who put their trust in technology as a way to conquer the forces of the Regulos. They include the Eth, the Bahmi, and the Kelari.

Players are able to choose from four main classes, the warrior, the mage, the rogue, and the cleric. Each of the four main classes have eight subclasses. Each subclass has different attributes and different roles which you can mix and match up to three possibly even four classes. Need a tank which can also be a healer? How about a archer that can teleport to safety? It’s all possible but that is just some of the possibilities of each subclass. The Soul Tree also helps power up your classes that you choose. Each class has a soul tree you can add skill points to that strengthen character’s powers and spells and/or skills. Like a real tree, the skill tree has branches which are the normal active and passive skills. There’s also a root system that has been added. The more you progress in one class the more abilities and spells you unlock in the root or the “core” abilities.

After spending a large amount of time configuring what classes I’d want to play and how my character should look as a Guardian, I got my first glimpse of the world Telara and what it has to offer. Right out of the gates a war torn Telara stretches over the horizon as incoming catapult fire illuminates the sky and smashes into the ground around you. The world of Telara is vibrant and full of colors, and what makes it even more vibrant are shifts that rip open the sky and pour out different dimension. Of course the game varies on how well your computer setup is and if it can run the game on higher resolutions, although the game can run a moderate to low end computer with everything turned down.

Adventuring out into the lands of Telara you can’t help but notice there are always NPC’s waiting to hand out quests to you left and right. Just one night of questing and grinding, leveled me up to 15 in no time. The great thing is that the quests may not be completed because of the many rifts that may open up over certain NPC’s or even just small raid groups attacking a city. Why is this great? Instead of the lull of having to hunt down enemies for other quests to gain levels, the invasion of rifters helps break up the monotony of grinding certain areas. Another tidbit that keeps the game interesting is artifact gathering. The game tends to reward players who like to explore areas thoroughly. Collecting a set of artifacts in the game and turning them in gives players different types of rewards.

Rift so far gives players plenty to do. If you aren’t questing you’re raiding, if you aren’t raiding you’re going into instances, and if you aren’t doing any of that then you’re in the Warfronts (Rifts version of Battlegrounds). Warfront, depending on what level you are, has four different instances. Black Garden, The Codex, Whitefall Steppes, and The Battle for Port Scion. Each game consisting of playing keep away, capture the flag, holding territories, or trying to kill the other team’s commander.

Trion has done a great deal to keep things fun in the game, but to call it a WoW killer is still too early to say. If you’re looking for a game to get away from WoW and change up the experience of MMO’s then look no further. Rift has a large assortment of different ways to play characters and classes, which gives veteran MMO players new dynamics and a breath of fresh air. The world of Telara seems vast and full of things to do, and with much more content on the way expect to be busy for months maybe even years to come.

Super Monkey Ball 3D Review

1

The Super Monkey Ball series is known for giving players a fun puzzle experience with several mini games. The previous games have been on the Gamecube and Wii and now Super Monkey Ball is on the 3DS.

Super Monkey Ball 3D is one of the launch games for the 3DS, the main part of the game Monkey Ball is a puzzle game where you move your monkey through levels. The game starts off easy but gets difficult towards the end, there are about 80 levels in total, and though that might sound like it is shorter than previous games.

The two mini games in Super Monkey Ball 3D are Monkey Race and Monkey Fight. Monkey Race is a basic kart racing game similar to Mario Kart. Players drive around courses while collecting items, it’s a decent game but by itself it doesn’t offer much. The physics in the game feel off, it’s not bad but it is noticeable. Monkey Fight is a basic fighting game like Super Smash Bros. but not at all as good as it, the fighting is a very basic style and just comes across as boring.

The graphics are average, it looks very similar to the Gamecube and Wii games which is good, the environments are colorful and have plenty of style to them. The graphics aren’t the strongest in the 3DS launch games but they aren’t bad either. The sound is also average the music is a typical cutesy style, and the sound effects are basic. There’s a few sounds from the monkeys and the environment but like the graphics its not very strong but not bad either.

The 3D effect in Super Monkey Ball 3D is pretty good if you play around with the 3D slider until you find what’s best for you. The 3D effect does look good but it can get distracting during the main game Monkey Ball because environment is moving so much.

Overall Super Monkey Ball 3D is an average 3DS game, it’s not bad but the game is very basic. The main game Monkey Ball isn’t very long and the mini games aren’t very interesting. It’s a safe game to buy for younger kids but gamers who are looking for game that has more to should try another game.

Alice: Madness Returns To Get Original Alice As DLC

0

American McGee’s Alice is slated to be bundled up with Alice: Madness Returns. Why? Because it’s just madness! In a interview with CVG, McGee felt that the game’s never really had a longevity with multiplayer modes or what not. So to give back to the community and loyal fans they’re bundling the original Alice game with the sequel. Also to give back to the community McGee will be releasing lots of DLC in the form of dresses with different attributes to them. Who said you can’t play dress up?

Hack N’ Slash Fun with PWE’s Upcoming “Rusty Hearts”

Rusty Hearts art

That’s right, Perfect World Entertainment has already announced a new MMORPG to add to their already large repertoire. Soon to be entering beta testing (which I will be taking part of), Rusty Hearts is one of PWE’s newest games. It will feature 3 characters with their own abilities which will allow you to go through each of their storylines all the while in anime art style. It actually kind of reminds me of games like Drakengard or even Devil May Cry. It even seems to be about undead monsters and vampires. I must say I am pretty intrigued. Keep an eye out for more updates as I get them. And I will most definitely keep everyone updated as I try out the beta!

Please check out the site if you’re interested in Rusty Hearts or any of PWE’s other MMO’s at www.perfectworld.com

Halo Reach: Defiant Map Pack Review

0

Many wouldn’t know this but Bungie has finally handed over the keys to Halo and has moved on from the series. While we are definitely sad to see them go it’s important to note that 343i has taken over all control of Reach and their first step is the Defiant Map Pack. The map pack has 3 different maps varying in size and game type, did 343i studios deliver?

Condemned is a 4 on 4 map and my personal favorite. Team Slayer, Oddball, Stockpile and Free-for-All were some of the game types that I have witnessed which all work pretty well. Set on a UNSC station in space, miles away from the completely glassed planet of Reach. Parts of the ship have been destroyed and you can see the battle still taking place as another UNSC ship and the Covenant are battling at a distance in space. While pieces of the ship have been disabled a particular section has low gravity which I have witnessed very interesting battles in. The best part is watching things float around in a room which looks normal at first until you step into its field.

Highlands is the second map and is set on a military wilderness training preserve on Reach. To my understanding the map actually comes from the Halo novel and is one that fans from the first book would remember. Like Noble Map pack this is the large map out of the pack where big team battles are taken place. The map spreads across one base to another with rocks and small mountains surrounding. There is plenty to do in this map with vehicles also being at your forefront. Covenant ships can be seen firing and glassing areas on Reach while your in battle. The issues I have found in this game is some of the maps high points which tend to be more on one side then the other. They become very easy to be picked off by snipers without a trace of where exactly its coming from.

A new addition to any map pack that has come out for Reach or Halo is Unearthed which is the new Firefight map. The map is on a UNSC base with its main focus is on big guns and big vehicles. Unlike other Firefight maps it plays slightly different and will need to take advantage of the equipment around you to get through harder waves and a better score. Vehicles with the biggest explosive damage is something you definitely want to do here, not only is it satisfying but the kills that can be racked up is pretty sweet.

Visually 343i did a great job staying true the game but adding a bit of flare with the overall surroundings for each area. Already released on Xbox Live the Defiant Map Pack pits players on what they already know, which are events at the planets very last moments and after. Halo fans will get a kick out of the variety while hardcore players will find new challenges to make their mark.

Netflix Gets Kinect-ed

1

Xbox 360 has upped the ante again with Kinect. Netflix subscribers can finally use the Kinect’s gesture and voice controls to navigate through all the menus and control video playback. Guess you can finally practice your minority report impersonations, and of course gloves and Scientology optional.

Nintendo 3DS Hardware Review

The Nintendo 3DS has been one of the most hyped products in a while, not only is it Nintendo’s next generation handheld system but it’s also glassesless 3D. The first thing most people will notice about the 3DS is that it physically looks a lot like a regular DS however there a plenty of changes on the system. The top screen is now a wide screen format, a new circle pad is added alongside the traditional D-pad and there is a 3D slider on the right side of the top screen.

The body of the 3DS feels solid, similar to the previous DS. The buttons click down and the d-pad feels like any other DS. The circle pad works really well, it adds a lot better handle on controls. The shoulder buttons also click too so overall the buttons feel good and is an improvement over the regular DS.

The screens on the 3DS have nice look to them, the bottom one is like the previous DS with it’s touch screen. The top screen which is in 3D is widescreen so it looks bigger then the previous DS. The screens are bright and very colorful, the resolution of both screens are both higher then the original DS.

There are three cameras on the 3DS, one front-facing and two rear-facing for the 3D pictures. The cameras are very low in quality and almost always look grainy, but for basic pictures and AR games they are good enough.

The actual interface of the 3DS is a big improvement over the DS the home screen is an expanded version of the DSi’s, players can scroll through the applications and games loaded onto the 3DS. The 3DS comes with a variety of software already loaded a new Mii maker allows you to create a Mii like the Wii, and a new feature called Mii Plaza allows you to use street pass and play a few mini games with your Mii. There are also a few games that come with the 3DS, one is AR Games that allows you to play an augmented reality game using a special card, the other game is FaceRaiders which is a basic shooter that has you shooting at face through the 3Ds camera. Both games are good ways to show of the hardware’s power but they are tech demos so they won’t keep your interest for too long. One thing to point out about the 3Ds software is that not everything is available yet, the virtual console store isn’t accessible yet as is a few other things Nintendo promises will be coming up soon.

The battery life of the 3Ds is probably it’s weakest point, with 3D enabled you’ll probably get about three to five hours, without 3D enabled you’ll get about five hours however this is definitely on the low end of portable devices, although it’s not very big draw back it you will notice the 3DS drain it’s battery much faster then the old DS did.

The 3D is the big draw of the 3DS of course and it does work, seeing games playing in 3D without glasses is definitely an interesting experience. The 3D effect is different for all people, so you’ll have to play around with the 3D slider which controls the depth of the 3D until you find a good spot for you. But when you effect the 3D screen aligned perfectly the effect is really nice.

Overall the 3DS is a good follow up to the DS but it has some issues, mainly it has a relatively short battery life. Also the price of $250 might be too high for many people, especially considering the launch line up isn’t very strong. However it’s a big technical achievement, the first portable system that gives players 3D games without glasses. The 3DS isn’t for everyone at the moment but if you want to experiences glassesless 3D gaming the 3DS is highly recommended.
