2XKO Is Ending Active Development, and This One Really Hurts.

Riot Games has announced that 2XKO will end active development in December 2026, and this one genuinely breaks our hearts. We really liked 2XKO and believed it had some of the best potential of any newer fighting game. After such a long development cycle dating back to Project L, it’s hard to believe its active development is already coming to an end.

For us, the biggest reason we believed in 2XKO was Duos. Being able to grab a friend and fight together wasn’t just another feature; it gave the game its own identity. We truly believed Duos could be the thing that helped 2XKO carve out its own lane in an increasingly competitive fighting game market, giving friends a way to experience a fighter together while still offering plenty of depth for competitive players.

Unfortunately, Riot says the numbers simply weren’t there. Plenty of players tried 2XKO and a passionate community formed around it, but not enough players stuck around. Riot evaluated retention, new players, engagement and revenue throughout 2026, and even major updates, new champions and competitive events failed to create meaningful, sustained growth. Riot says the game ultimately costs substantially more to operate than it brings in.

Riot considered several alternatives, including reducing the development team, changing the patch schedule and adjusting the business model. Ultimately, the company determined there wasn’t a viable path forward. That’s especially disappointing because we thought 2XKO had found a way to stand apart in a very competitive fighting game space. Duos offered something different, and we genuinely thought that difference could be enough to keep the game moving forward.

The good news is that 2XKO isn’t shutting down. Servers will remain online beyond 2026, and offline play will be unaffected. Lux arrives with Patch 1.3.1 in September, while Samira will become the game’s final champion in October. Riot will continue with balance changes and bug fixes before active development concludes, with a final bug-fix patch potentially arriving in December. Ranked will also be removed as matchmaking is consolidated into Casual lobbies.

Riot is also doing right by players who spent money on the game. All champions will be unlocked, and Riot is refunding money spent in 2XKO on or before August 20 while allowing players to keep the content they already own. KO Point purchases are being disabled, and most of the game’s cosmetics will eventually be bundled together.

It’s hard not to wonder what could have happened with more time. We’ve seen games struggle much more and still manage to survive for years, and with Riot behind 2XKO, we hoped there might be some way to keep active development going at a smaller scale. At the same time, Riot’s explanation makes it clear that this wasn’t a decision made solely because of revenue; retention and overall engagement simply never reached the level necessary to make the game sustainable.

That’s what makes this one hurt. 2XKO wasn’t a game without potential. It had strong gameplay, a passionate community and, most importantly, a Duo system that genuinely separated it from the competition. 2XKO found its lane; unfortunately, it just couldn’t find a big enough audience to stay in it.
