NVIDIA DLSS 5 Launches September 3 with NBA 2K27, and This Could Be a Much Bigger Leap Than More Frames

I’ve personally been waiting to see what NVIDIA would do with DLSS 5 since it was first announced. There was plenty of conversation around just how big of a leap it could be, but the part that always interested me most was the increased control being put into developers’ hands. Now we’re finally about to see what that looks like in an actual game.

NVIDIA is officially launching DLSS 5 on September 3, introducing what it calls 3D-Guided Neural Rendering. The technology debuts in NBA 2K27 across GeForce RTX 50 Series desktop GPUs and laptops, along with GeForce NOW. Rather than focusing primarily on reconstructing pixels or generating additional frames, DLSS 5 uses AI to enhance lighting, materials and fine visual detail while maintaining the underlying geometry and artistic direction created by developers.

That developer control is probably the most important part of this evolution. DLSS 5 uses the game’s existing rendered frame as its foundation, including its geometry, textures and lighting information. Developers can then selectively control where and how neural rendering is applied instead of handing the entire image over to an unpredictable generative model. In theory, that gives studios another visual tool rather than something that replaces their original work.

NBA 2K27 is actually a pretty interesting showcase for it. NVIDIA worked closely with Visual Concepts and 2K to improve some of the smaller details that help sell realistic human characters, including more natural skin lighting, light passing through ears, hair reacting more accurately to light and improved material responses, while still preserving facial geometry captured from the real athletes. Even spectators and arena staff benefit from improved lighting and shadows.

For me, this is where DLSS 5 starts becoming much more interesting than another performance upgrade. DLSS has already proven how dramatically AI can change the equation around frame rates and image quality. If 3D-Guided Neural Rendering can now help developers push details that previously weren’t practical in real time while still respecting their creative intent, there is potential here to take game visuals to another level.

NBA 2K27 will give us our first real look when DLSS 5 goes live September 3 at 9 PM Pacific, alongside a new GeForce Game Ready Driver. More games supporting the technology are expected to follow in the coming weeks and months.
