Finding toys that actually hold a child’s attention for more than a few days can be a challenge, especially when you’re looking for something that encourages movement instead of more screen time. After spending several weeks with the Stapelstein Rainbow Set, it’s become one of the most-used toys in our home, and one that continues to surprise us with just how versatile it is.
As the parent of a very active 3½-year-old, I was looking for something that would encourage independent play while helping develop balance, coordination, and creativity. The Stapelstein Rainbow Set checked all of those boxes, and then some.
The experience started off on the right foot. Everything arrived ready to use with no assembly required, and something I always appreciate with children’s products—there was no strong chemical smell right out of the box. The colors are bright, vibrant, and match exactly what you see online, while the finish is smooth with no rough edges.
Within minutes my son was already building obstacle courses around the house.
One of the biggest strengths of the Stapelstein system is how easy it is for younger children to use independently. My son can carry each piece himself, stack them, unstack them, and constantly redesign his own play area without asking for help.
Despite being incredibly lightweight, they’re far more durable than they look. They’ve supported his weight while standing, jumping, and even sitting inside one like a little bucket seat without showing any signs of flexing or damage. They feel like they’re built to survive years of everyday use.

One feature we didn’t expect to use nearly as much is the fact that they’re completely waterproof.
We’ve used them outside for water play and sensory activities, but they’ve also become a fun addition to bath time. Every now and then we’ll toss a couple into the tub just to mix things up, and my son loves filling them, pouring water between them, stacking them, and creating little games. It’s a simple way to make bath time feel fresh without buying another set of bath toys.
That extra versatility makes the Rainbow Set feel like much more than just another balance toy.
For us living in New York City and having an apartment means storage matters.
Thankfully, all of the pieces nest together into one compact stack that takes up very little floor space. Cleanup is just as easy since they wipe clean quickly after indoor, outdoor, or water play.
There really isn’t much to complain about.
The only issue we ran into was using them on hardwood floors. During more active play they can slide around a bit, so we found they work much better on an area rug or carpet where they stay planted.
The other hurdle is the price. There are definitely less expensive balance toys available. However, after using these for several weeks, it’s easy to see where that extra cost goes. The construction feels premium, the materials are exceptionally durable, and Stapelstein’s commitment to sustainability is worth mentioning. Each piece is made from recyclable expanded polypropylene (EPP) that’s free of harmful chemicals, making it a product you can feel comfortable bringing into your home.
Some toys are exciting for a weekend before getting pushed into a closet. The Stapelstein Rainbow Set has been the complete opposite.

While the price may cause some hesitation, the quality and endless play possibilities make it feel like a worthwhile long-term investment rather than another short-lived toy purchase!
