Where there’s a fandom, there are cosplayers. Dressing up as your favorite character or even an object can be serious business. I like to think of cosplay as more of an exclusive event. Not everyone does it or knows about it but it does exist. It mostly happens for photoshoots, events and conventions (Though some of us probably wouldn’t mind it if we could dress up daily). But because of all this, it doesn’t really get much attention from other people. Unless it’s for a huge event like E3 or a Comic Con. Until now…
Next month, Syfy is going to air a 6 episode documentary series about cosplay called “Heroes of Cosplay”. The series will feature several big names from the cosplay world and have them create cosplay from popular series for cash prizes. I think Syfy enjoys contests like this because it sure sounds like their other series “Face Off”. Only now, it’s for cosplay.
I, myself, am a little skeptical of how this could go. This could really open new doors for cosplay in general and show creators just how much of an impact their creations have. Conventions and events could get more recognition than just the big ones like E3 and Comic Con. Or this series could go really bad and just ridicule cosplay as a whole. Being a cosplayer doesn’t mean everything goes perfect and there is drama and disappointment. But that doesn’t mean it’s not worth it.
The series starts Tuesday, August 13 at 10:30 PM ET/PT before moving to its regular time Tuesdays at 10 PM, starting August 20th. I’ll just watch and hope for the best.
