SEGA and Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio are bringing Virtua Fighter back in a much bigger way with Virtua Fighter Crossroads, an all-new mainline entry in the legendary fighting game franchise set to launch in 2027.
Instead of just giving fans another remake or refresh, Crossroads looks like a real step forward for the series. The game blends the clean, realistic fighting Virtua Fighter is known for with a more cinematic, story-driven action-adventure experience from the team behind Like a Dragon.
The game is set in Vilasapara, a fictional Southeast Asian island city with a dangerous underground fighting scene and plenty of tension running through its streets. The story follows four new protagonists whose paths start to cross as the city gets pulled deeper into chaos.
One of those fighters is Cielo, a U.S.-born fighter who brings a mix of MMA and boxing into the fold. While the focus is clearly on a new generation of characters, longtime fans will still have some familiar faces to look forward to, including Akira Yuki, Pai Chan and Wolf Hawkfield.

At EVO 2026 in Las Vegas, SEGA dropped a new trailer revealing the Bakunawa Killer, a mysterious new character tied directly into the game’s story. In the trailer, a series of attacks on martial artists has shaken Vilasapara, with Pai and Cielo trying to uncover the identity of the person behind them.
The Bakunawa Killer will not just be part of the story either. SEGA also confirmed the character will be playable in Versus Mode, giving players another reason to keep an eye on how the roster is shaping up.
What makes Virtua Fighter Crossroads interesting is how it seems to be balancing old and new. The game still keeps the franchise’s classic 1v1 combat identity intact with its familiar three-button system built around punch, kick and guard. At the same time, the story mode is pushing things further with exploration, dramatic fights, multi-opponent battles and boss encounters.
For a series that has always been respected for its clean mechanics and grounded combat, this feels like a bold way to reintroduce Virtua Fighter to a modern audience.
Virtua Fighter Crossroads is currently scheduled to launch in 2027, with platforms and more details still to be announced.
