Dead Rising: Case West Review

Capcom has really put in a lot of effort into their Dead Rising franchise, along with the full retail sequel they’ve also released a stand alone prequel and now a continuation of the story involving the hero from the original game.
Dead Rising: Case West begins where Dead Rising 2 ends, Chuck meets up with Frank from the original game who is on his way to uncover some of secrets behind zombie outbreak. As the two join up the game goes more into the story and mysteries of the game and becomes a fun coop adventure.
The game is coop so there are two characters throughout the entire game, players can play by themselves and take control of Chuck while the computer controls Frank, or they can play with a friend over Xbox Live. Unfortunately there is no option to play local coop. However players will find that playing by themselves and with a friend are both done well. One of the things to point out is that when playing single player Frank can’t be killed so you won’t have to worry about protecting him or escorting him around so that saves players from a lot problems. With two players you can obviously plan your approach but if the two players aren’t working well with each other then it can get very difficult.

The basic gameplay of Dead Rising: Case West is almost exactly like the other games, players are in a big open area where they have to go around and complete missions to continue the main story. The mechanic of combining weapons together is used in Dead Rising: Case West so players can make some interesting weapons that were in Dead Rising 2 and some new ones. One of interesting things about the game however is that it does change things a little, you don’t have to escort survivors to a safe house anymore so that actually minimizes the missions that were more of a problem in the previous games.
The graphics and audio are the same as the previous games in the series, the environments and characters all look detailed and the voices of Chuck and Frank are done well. It’s still very impressive to see so many zombies on screen at once and with two players working together to fight them all looks nice.
Overall Dead Rising: Case West is fun game to play through, the game is equally a good single player and coop game. Fans of the Dead Rising series will definitely be interested to see what happens to Chuck and Frank, if you haven’t played Dead Rising 2 you’ll probably need to see the ending of it for the game to make sense but even if you haven’t played it you can still try out Dead Rising: Case West because its one of the best parts of the series.

CES 2011: Onlive making its way onto Vizio TVs and devices
It has been announced that the cloud based gaming service Onlive is partnering up with VIZIO. The company will be offering the service installed on their TVs, Blu-ray players and mobile devices. This will be standard on VIZIO’s new VIA Plus line of products which will go into a whole new line of electronics this year. This is a big step for Onlive as it is one step closer into being a app line similar to Netflix on TVs.
It had also been mentioned that having the Onlive hardware installed into the TVs already will eliminate any lag input you get between the signal coming from a device. Since most of VIZIO’s line will include 3D it will make it easier for Onlive to get 3D content to those viewers. This looks to be something that can really take off and with other apps going onto TVs and media boxes this only seems like a natural fit.

Haggar and Phoenix (Not Wright) Join MvC 3 Lineup

Mike Haggar from Final Fight and Phoenix from the X-Men revealed and will join the fray in Marvel vs Capcom 3. Mike Haggar, shirtless like always, will have a move set similar to the Final Fight series long pipes included! Ultra Combos will include an ultimate pile driver and a barrage of under handed body blows followed up by a double over head smash. If he wasn’t re-elected as mayor I dunno who would be better fit for the job.

Phoenix however is ready to turn up the heat. A mixture of fire based moves and super/ultra combos based around the fiery passion will turn her opponents to ash. Her ultra combos consist of calling upon her Phoenix powers to create a orb around her to heal her, a psychic overload that pushes the opponent back, and last but not least a big phoenix made of flames to attack.
Due out next month Marvel vs Capcom 3 is one of the most anticipated fighting games for this year. My hands are already itching to play. So are you ready to go for gold?
Quick Look at DC Universe Online Beta

If you’re one of the few who have the Playstation Plus subscription then you were one of the lucky ones who had access to the DC Universe Online beta. Aside the beta, we actually seen a glimpse of DCUO at the New York Comic Con. The art style and graphics were eye popping, let alone all the voice overs for all the different characters like Joker, Batman, Superman, and many other DC heroes and villains. Unfortunately the Beta has now come to an end but for those looking to get into the action can do so next week on the games actual release date. With that said here’s a bit of what we’ve experienced from the beta.
Off the bat there is definitely tons of content to be found. Just in character creation alone I spent a good 45 minutes going through different types of costumes for each part of the body. After character creation comes the part where you choose a mentor. Heroes get Batman for gadgets/tech, Superman for super abilities/meta, and Wonder Woman magic. Villains get Joker for gadgets/tech, Lex Luthor for super abilities/meta, and Circes for magic. As you can see there are multiple possibilities in this game, some heroes may have the same look but their skills will be different.

After character creation you’re placed into one of two large cities, Metropolis or Gotham and this is where the fun begins. You get to venture out into the world as a hero or villain, taking up quests from different key figures like Commissioner Gordon, or Black Adam to lead your character throughout each city to thwart other hero or villain from completing their devious plans.
Everything from bosses, PVP, city exploration, bounty’s and more can be had in this game. That’s not much of a surprise as this is an MMORPG and it’s trying showcase the longevity it has to offer. Some of our best moments came from fights like taking down Scarecrow at his layer, getting to know the older Justice League or the Brainiac PVE events with ton’s of other people. The game even issued a end of beta event for all those to take sides as heroes or villains and align themselves with some of the best know DC characters. It didn’t turn out as smooth as I would have imagined, then again I’m not sure what does when you tell 1000+ people to go to one area at the same time.

I had a lot of fun playing this game and I’ve I gotta say that the game looks very good. The custom characters with different powers and talent tree gives players so many choices for character development. There were tons of quests to take on so there wasn’t any type of down time unless you chose not to do anything or just chose to grind. Starting a new hero or villain with deep stories, great action, and huge areas to explore seems more appealing now than it did before and it’ll be just in time for next weeks launch. This is one game you may not want to pass up if you’re a DC comic fan so strap your cape on and head to the stores on January 11, 2011. Tune in as we’ll be giving you our review once it comes out.

Final Fantasy XIII Original Soundtrack Review

I will be honest and admit something. When I learned that Nobuo Uematsu, the music composer for the Final Fantasy series was resigning in 2004, I was a bit skeptical of how the soundtracks for the game series would turn out. Though Final Fantasy XI was the last soundtrack he composed, he still makes music here and there. Now comes Final Fantasy XIII, composed by Masashi Hamauzu.
Final Fantasy XIII was the first of the series to not have anything created by Nobuo. Though he was kind enough to give the Final Fantasy theme to Masashi, Nobuo did not participate in the making of this game’s score and honestly, I had mixed feelings about this soundtrack. Before I get into I do want to point out that yes Final Fantasy XIII did come out almost a year ago but it is important to learn how Masashi had compared to Nubou being that future iterations will likely lead on this path.
First off the soundtrack has some great packaging design. This thing is big, boasting 4 disks and 85 tracks with great artwork across each panel of the fold out box but enough about that. There are some powerful pieces that do stand out, but not many are really all that memorable. At least not in the way previous Final Fantasy soundtracks have been. Now, that’s not to say it was a bad score, I still listen to the soundtrack and actually enjoy it a lot.
Environmental themes – When it comes to environmental themes, tracks like “A Brief Respite” and “The Sunleth Waterscape” definitely give you that Final Fantasy feel and make you imagine that you’re really there. They just have this emotion like you’re listening to the original Final Fantasy theme, which I appreciate and think of it as a tribute to the theme.
Action themes – I must say, were done really well. They kept the pace moving and actually made the scenes more exciting to follow. “Blinded by Light” and “Defiers of Fate” are a couple of my favorites. Infusing classical and technological instruments just made everything come together in a powerful way. You felt that rush as people were running, there was fighting going on, they just kept you watching and getting into what was going on.
Emotional themes – In Final Fantasy, it’s all about the emotion. And its music is a major part of how the player receives that scene and you know you can count on the music delivering when it comes to a Final Fantasy game. The bittersweet sound of the acoustic guitar in “This Is Your Home” is beautiful to listen to but sad at the same time. “Atonement” captures that same feeling with the delicate song of the violin.

Character themes – Every character has to have a theme right? For the most part, I felt each of the characters’ themes matched their personalities. Though there were some I liked more than others and doesn’t anyone else find it funny that Serah was the only one that had a theme with vocals? I will admit that Serah’s and Hope’s themes were two of my favorites and just so happen to be two of the melodies that are most repeated throughout the score.
Prelude and Ending themes – I will say I do miss the Final Fantasy theme but I think the Prelude was done extremely well considering. It kind of reminds me of the industrial themes like that of Final Fantasy VII. I have always loved the combination of digital and classical music and the Prelude has a very nice balance to it. The Ending theme is beautifully composed in a traditional Final Fantasy style with a full orchestra and accommodates all of the different themes used in the entire score. Again, I do wish the Final Fantasy theme was part of it.
Love themes – Another element of the series are the love songs. FFXIII gave us, in the Japanese version, two vocal love themes which mainly surrounded Snow and Serah’s relationship as well as the close friendship between the members of the group: “Kimi ga Iru Kara (Because You Exist)” and “Eternal Love.” Both songs are sung by Sugawara Sayuri. The international version of the game had “My Hands” by Leona Lewis from one of her albums. I am a believer in keeping everything in its original form and while I do like “My Hands” a lot, I think Square-Enix should have kept “Kimi ga Iru Kara” and “Eternal Love” as the love theme songs. “My Hands” just sounded a little too pop-ish for my tastes as a Final Fantasy fan.
Chocobo theme – Chocobos are one of the icons of the Final Fantasy series and even have their own song. I, however, found that this game’s version was not a very good rendition of it. Honestly, the one from Final Fantasy VIII was the best rock version and didn’t even need lyrics. I just feel adding vocals to it just took away from the iconic theme.
Least Favorites – There were some tracks that just seemed a bit out of place for me. My least favorites were “Can’t Catch a Break”(sounds a little too jazzy for me), “Battle Results” (another case where I would have loved to hear the theme we are all used to), and “The Yaschas Massif” (sounded like it was trying to hard to be the song from Costa del Sol in FFVII).
My final thoughts – Overall, this soundtrack was pretty good and it does have a lot of replay value (for many of the tracks). As a score on its own, I appreciate the sounds and the feelings I get from the composition. As the newest addition to the long line of scores to the Final Fantasy series, there could have been a few adjustments or one more step some of the tracks could have taken to make it just a bit better. Definitely not a bad first project for Square-Enix’s newest composer. Congrats, Masashi Hamauzu, I cannot wait to see your next work!
